Fish Creek and the Town of Gibraltar Honors Peninsula State Park’s
Centennial throughout Heritage Days 2009

In honor of Peninsula State Park’s Centennial, the Gibraltar Historical Association is dedicating Heritage Days 2009 to Door County’s emerald treasure. Since its’ establishment 100 years ago, Peninsula State Park has earned a reputation for its’ boundless recreational opportunities and incredible natural beauty. And positioned in close to proximity to Fish Creek, the two have maintained a relationship that reflects a remarkable past.

In 1858, the Township of Gibraltar--consisting of the villages of Fish Creek, Juddville and Maple Grove--was established. Farmers, lumbermen, and fishermen settled their families on the surrounding fields, scrapping out homesteads bordered with the rocks they cleared.

Some of the early pioneers settled on acreage that would be designated as park property. Homesteaders, they had expected to live on their land for generations to come. Although official records vary, approximately 70 parcels of land owned by 40 families were transferred, sold or were otherwise acquired by the state for the new park.
As the community grew, so too did the business community. Fish Creek’s Main Street boasted three general stores, a school, library, and post office. A greenhouse and nursery, a tavern, grocery store, gift shop, and gas station were all located on land that would years later be designated state park property.

“The history of Peninsula State Park and the Fish Creek village is so closely connected; the two literally grew up together and have been intertwined in so many unique ways. It is important that we celebrate our unified history as a community,” said Eunice Rutherford, Gibraltar Historical Association board president.

“This collaborative celebration is an effort to preserve and promote our shared heritage and legacy, both the park and the village. And we hope this first Heritage Days celebration continues each year, and that more and more people will become involved.”
Continuing the celebration of community begun with the Town of Gibraltar’s Sesquicentennial last year, Heritage Days 2009 will host activities for the entire family beginning Friday, June 5 and concluding Sunday, June 15. From a sunset serenade to candle-light tours of Fish Creek’s historical village, stories of ghosts and tales of tragedy-at-sea, Heritage Days 2009 will be a charming walk through history.
“There will be ongoing activities scattered throughout the village,” emphasized Rutherford, “and everything will be free with the exception of the Hootenanny Concert on June 13th which will require a $10 ticket.” The concert will feature the 5 Milers who will perform a concert of folk music appropriate for the entire family.

“The seeds of our future were planted by our forefathers and mothers; their names are still recalled with affection…Alexander Noble, Asa Thorp, Increase Claflin,” recalled Rutherford. “Heritage Days 2009 remembers these early pioneers in with fun, family-friendly celebration that will echo with our history and past, while looking forward to the future.”

For additional information and a complete list of events visit www.Gibralatar150.org, www.FishCreek150.org, or www.historicnoblehouse.org. Information on all of the events will be available at locations throughout Fish Creek. The Hootenanny Benefit Concert will begin at 7 pm on Saturday, May 13th in the Old Town Hall. Concert tickets are available for purchase at the Fish Creek Information Center, the Noble House, or by calling 920.868.3373.

Orchard Country Winery & Market Celebrates Peninsula State Park’s Centennial: Release of 2nd Edition Collectible Lighthouse Bottle

In celebration of Peninsula State Park’s 100th birthday, Orchard Country Winery & Market uncorks the second in a series of limited edition lighthouse wine during an open house on Saturday, May 16th. The unique blend of Riesling grapes and Door County Montmorency cherries arrives once again in a blue lighthouse-shaped bottle whose label this time around features a Jack Anderson painting of the Peninsula State Park’s Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. The Open House is scheduled for 10 am – 5 pm.
“We picked this date because it is a great time to visit the peninsula and partake in the splendor of the blossoming orchards and wildflowers,” said Carrie Viste, co-manager of Orchard Country. “Also, everyone loves a lighthouse and Door County has more lighthouses than any other county in the United States. The unveiling of this blend and this unique bottle honors both the 2009 centennial of the park and one of the county’s most cherished traditions-lighthouses.”
The selection of an Anderson painting to grace Orchard Country’s second collectible lighthouse wine label was an appropriate choice. A full-time Door County resident since 1986, the watercolorist is inspired by the county’s natural beauty; his paintings reflect his passion for peninsula.
One of a series of four lighthouses Anderson painted in 2007, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is particularly special to the artist. “There is a certain nostalgia about the Peninsula State Park lighthouse, a unique history based on its location,” said Anderson. “I am honored to have my painting selected for the label, how nice.”
Open House visitors are invited to “Meet the Artist” from 10 am – noon when Anderson will sign his artwork featured on the newly released bottles. Keepsake labels will also be available for purchase from the 1st Door County Lighthouse wine of the series.
One of the county’s original “farms,” Orchard Country is an old world blending of winery, tasting room, and country market surrounded by acres of fruit laden trees and vines. Along with father Bob Lautenbach, Viste and her sister Erin Lautenbach own and operate the fourth-generation farm orchard that is consistently recognized for its award-winning fruit wines, refreshing ciders, and wide selection of home-made Door County products.
Over the past 50 years, quality fruit products have become the hallmark of Orchard Country. Complimentary product tastings will be offered to visitors during the open house along with free guided tours of the winery and grounds at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Orchard Country’s line of Sartori Cheeses will be featured from 11 am – 3 pm and visitors can enter the drawing for a lighthouse gift package valued at over $100. Including a bottle of Door County Lighthouse wine from the 1st and 2nd series, along with Door County Trolley Lighthouse Tour tickets, the raffle drawing will take place over Lighthouse Walk Weekend- Saturday, June 13th at 3PM.
“We are so pleased to feature a local artist and Jack Anderson was a great choice for our 2nd of the series. It is a wonderful showcase for his love of lighthouses,” said Viste. “I hope our guests will enjoy the new blend and the lighthouse-shaped keepsake bottle. It is about taking home a bit of Door County.”
Jack Anderson’s original artwork and prints are available for purchase at Cottage Row Framing & Gallery located in the historic barn behind the Orchard Country Winery & Market. Orchard Country is open daily from 9 – 5 pm. Orchard Country Winery & Market, located at 9197 Highway 42 just south of Fish Creek, is open year round. Visit the website www.orchardcountry.com for additional information.

Door County Interior & Designs and Home Show!

This just in!

_________

People get decorating ideas from Door County Interiors pros during the Showcase of Homes May 8 and 9 and 15 - 17

People can obtain ideas for creating diverse decorating styles when they tour Peninsula area homes, decorated by the staff at Door County Interiors & Design.

Designers at the Egg Harbor-based home furnishings store have decorated interiors of three homes on this year’s Showcase of Homes, set for May 8 and 9 and May 15, 16 and 17. The event is sponsored by the Door County Home Builders Association.

The homes decorated by Door County Interiors have looks ranging from arts and crafts to casual. Furniture, fabrics, rugs, window coverings, finishes and accessories help pull each style together.

In addition their visual appeal, the interiors are comfortable, according to Carol Trimberger of Door County Interiors & Design. “Comfort is not just how you feel physically on the furnishings. You also have to be comfortable in the environment and with your color and your style,” she said.

The first home decorated by Door County Interiors & Design is an Egg Harbor vacation home on Green Bay waters. It has 8,000 square feet and a soothing and sophisticated arts and crafts style. Upscale fabrics by Ralph Lauren and Kravet are featured. There are walnut floors and five fireplaces—one accented by recycled century-old tile from Italy. The kitchen has celadon green cabinets, in-cabinet glass shelving and lighting, diverse countertop surfaces and a backsplash of distinctive travertine tile.

“The home doesn’t give you the feeling of size. There is the warmth of colors, and your eye is constantly taking in all the beauty,” said Ron Trimberger of Door County Interiors & Design.

A second showcase house also is used as a getaway home. With 1,500 square feet, the Fish Creek home in Park Place Villas has an interior that intimately interprets arts and crafts style. “Arts and crafts style is coming back, because it is so easy on the eyes. The lines are easy to work with—graceful and detailed, but not overly detailed. And the colors are not garish. It is a beautiful palette,” Carol Trimberger said.

The rugs and upholstery show shades of brown, red, gold, sage and black. Two throw rugs, actually in the same pattern, define seating and dining areas in the villa’s open living room. The dining table, made with pounded copper and glass top, has an airy feeling.

And while touring the third home, people will garner ideas for creating a casual and comfortable look, suitable for retirees and others. The 1,500 Baileys Harbor square foot showcase home has a living area outfitted with a brown leather sofa and ottoman and upholstered recliner. Tables and wood stools nestled behind the sofa provide additional seating for guests and save space.

“This home is designed for casual family living, and if you have a lot of guests you can move the stools out for seating in any place,” Carol Trimberger said. More information about Door County Interiors & Design is available online at doorcountyinteriors.com or by stopping by the showroom, 7266 Hwy. 42, two miles south of Egg Harbor.

DCA
Presents
“Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow”
Featuring Wisconsin Author Michael Perry

Humorist and bestselling author Michael Perry is as ordinary as the day is long. He more times than not arrives at his guest lectures and readings in a pair of well-worn jeans, a scuffed pair of boots on his feet. But it is that very ordinariness that makes Perry exceptional. With an eye for the mundane and an ear for a good tale--tall or otherwise--the author of three books and countless essays and articles has won the hearts of fans across the United States with stories of everyday life.

On April 17, 2009, Perry will appear at the Door Community Auditorium. Reading from his books and sharing stories of growing up in a small town in western Wisconsin, the author will relate the joys and sorrows of living in close proximity to his neighbors, family, and friends. And though Perry professes a lack of sentimentality, his books and essays are delicate vignettes, both tender and compassionate.

It is the universality of Perry’s stories that resonate with readers. Often greeted with “your town is just like our town,” Perry commented, “…they are focusing less on size and geography than some idea of contented centeredness or generalized familiarity. Put another way, it seems to be less about the number on the sign than the feel of a place.”

Due for release on Tuesday, April 21, Coop: A Year of Poultry, Pig and Parenting is Perry’s newest book. Picking up where his 2007 publication Truck: A Love Story left off, Perry chronicles his adventures as a husband, father, and sometime farmer. Confronted by his young daughter’s questions about faith, a butt-biting pig, and the loss of a dear friend, Perry is thoughtful, tender, and humorous.

All of Perry’s books will be available for purchase the night of the presentation; Coop will be available for pre-order the night of the presentation. The author will be signing his books immediately following the talk.

“Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow” featuring Wisconsin author Michael Perry is funded in part by a grant provided by Peninsula Arts Association, Wisconsin Arts Board and the State of Wisconsin. This presentation is scheduled to begin at 7 pm. Michael Perry’s program is free and open to the public. The Door Community Auditorium box office is open Monday through Friday, 10 am – 3 pm. For additional information contact the office at 920.868.2728 or visit www.dcauditorium.org. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

Peninsula Players Announce 2009 Season

Just in from our friends at Peninsula Players Theatre! The new season is coming!

______

For Immediate Release
Contact: Audra Baakari Boyle
920.868.3287

Fish Creek, Wisconsin – Peninsula Players Theatre, America’s oldest professional resident summer theater and Door County’s theatrical icon is pleased to announce its 74th season running June 16 through October 18.

A major role of Peninsula Players’ Artistic Director Greg Vinkler is play selection. Vinkler not only looks for shows to stir excitement in patrons, but also in the resident company of actors and designers. “Enthusiasm builds in the company to meet the challenges of each show,” Vinkler said, “and the creative results are expressed in the final product on stage.”

Selecting a variety of works to highlight the Players 74th year of professional theater in northeast Wisconsin was especially exciting for Vinkler this year. In addition to his work for Peninsula Players Vinkler is also in previews for Broadway’s “West Side Story.”

“I am always on the look-out for theatrical works to bring to Door County audiences,” Vinkler said. “I read and re-read scripts. I go see shows. I take time to search not only for thrilling new theatrical pieces to bring to the stage, but also classic pieces that engage audiences. I believe the choices I have made will offer audiences a thrilling, challenging and above all exciting experience at the theater.”

The Peninsula Players will open its 74th season June 16 with David Rambo’s “The Lady with all the Answers.” This comedy is drawn from the life and letters of Ann Landers, the “Mistress of Manners,” with the cooperation of her daughter Margo Howard. From an accomplished playwright who has producer credits for “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” Rambo delivers a hilarious look into the life of Ann Landers. If one needed blunt advice, they wrote to Ann. But to whom can Ann turn when life hands her lemons? “The Lady with all the Answers” will run through July 5.

Peninsula Players 2009 Season Add One …

Next up will be a double-feature musical “A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine” (July 8 – July 26) with book and libretto by Dick Vosburgh, music by Frank Lazarus and additional lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. This Tony Award-winning musical comedy is first a musical tribute from the ushers at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, who imagine themselves upon the silver screen; then in Act Two audiences are off to a Russian mansion and a fast-paced comedy à la the Marx Brothers, including tap dancing and rubber chickens!

From July 29 through August 16 the Peninsula Players presents the Midwest première of “Is He Dead?” by Mark Twain, adapted by David Ives. Written in 1898, the play was not published until it was rediscovered by Twain scholar, Shelly Fisher Fishkin, while doing research work at Berkley. First performed on Broadway in 2007, it garnered a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor. Millet, a young painter, fakes his death in order to pay off his girlfriend Marie’s debts. Millet then puts on a dress and passes himself off as his own sister while figuring a way to come back to life, don trousers again and marry Marie!

“Wait Until Dark” a thriller by Franklin Knott moves onto the stage from August 19 through Sept. 6. Sinister con men, who are willing to kill for what they want, meet their match in a courageous blind woman. They claim to seek material evidence against her husband, who is implicated in a murder. Susy struggles to outwit them in a cunning game of cat and mouse. “Wait Until Dark” is a meticulously crafted thrill-ride which was adapted to film in 1968 staring Audrey Hepburn.

Closing the season and bringing fast-paced adventure to the stage is “Around the World in 80 Days” (Sept. 9 – Oct. 18), adapted by Mark Brown based on the novel by Jules Verne. Take a whirlwind spin around the globe with fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg in a comic, family-friendly escapade as Fogg races to save the fortune he wagered.

Peninsula Players has been entertaining and exciting audiences since 1935, when the theater opened behind the Bonnie Brook Motel in Fish Creek on July 25 with Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever.” The company was founded by a brother and sister team, Caroline and Richard Fisher, who dreamed of an artistic utopia in the northwoods where actors, designers and technicians could focus on their craft while being surrounded by nature in a contemplative setting.

Peninsula Players 2009 Season Add two …

Peninsula Players moved to the theater’s present location along the shore of Green Bay in 1937. Prior to performances, patrons relax on the grounds while watching the setting sun over the waters of Green Bay from the cedar-lined shore and enjoying the ambience of the beer garden and various other gardens featuring flora and native greens.

The Fishers’ dream lives on as professional actors, directors and designers work side-by-side with college interns while living on the Players 16-acre campus as they bring audiences a variety of works including dramas, mysteries, comedies and musicals. In the fall of 2005, the troupe closed its season early to being construction on its new stagehouse and audience pavilion

“We hope you join the Peninsula Players in its 74th year,” Vinkler said. “From warm-hearted glimpses of a down-to-earth writer’s life to light comic romps, from romance to song and dance, from the thrill of mystery to a whirl-wind adventure around the world - we have so much for everyone to enjoy!”

The Peninsula Players perform Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. in the summer. With the opening of the fall show Sept. 9 curtain times are Tuesday through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. The closing performance of each show will have a 4 p.m. matinee, July 5, July 26, August 16, Sept. 6 and Oct. 19. Season, group and individual tickets are available. Individual ticket prices range from $30, $33 to $35; there are no performances on Mondays. For more information or to reserve tickets phone the Peninsula Players’ box office at 920-868-3287 or visit the website at www.peninsulaplayers.com.
