Door County Humane Society Fundraiser Set!

We just received this press release from the Door County Humane Society - a society we support. Read all about it and you too can help support it!

Door County Humane Society Hosts
2nd Annual
Doghouse Living on May 3rd

With the wag of a tail 10 members of the Door County community will literally move into the doghouse in support of the Door County Humane Society. Beginning at 9 am on Saturday, May 3rd, the second annual Doghouse Living fundraiser will begin with a bark and a mew. Hourly throughout the day, volunteers will move into the doghouse located at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Kentucky Street in an effort to raise funding, as well as, awareness.
“This is a fun event for the entire family,” said Carrie Counihan, DCHS executive director. “Everyone is invited to come out and spend the day with us. Our special guest will be Harley the Camel and he loves having his picture taken.” The day’s activities will also include live radio remotes and music. DCHS merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the day. Econo Foods is hosting a brat fry and all proceeds will benefit the DCHS.
The DCHS moved into its present location on County PD south of Sturgeon Bay in 1999. Serving the entire peninsula, the non-profit annually provides shelter to more than 600 animals that have been rescued, surrendered, or abandoned. The ultimate goal is to reunite pets with their owners or find them new homes. “It’s a big job,” emphasized Counihan, “but our staff, volunteers, and members do a great job in supporting our county’s most venerable citizens.”
Each of the Doghouse Living participants, whose individual goals are $1,000 in donations, will serve an hour in the doghouse located near the Sturgeon Bay Baylake Bank. Volunteer participants include DCHS board members Laurie Bastman, Dina Boettcher, Mary Ellen Dreutzer, Marilyn Jensen, and Nancy Larson. Community volunteers are Jay Blossom of Door County Realty, Sturgeon Bay council member Ben Meyer; Door County Visitor Bureau CEO/President Jack Moneypenny; WSBW “Morning Edition” host Patti Podgers, and Sturgeon Bay Chief of Police Dan Trelka.
“Last year’s goal was $17,000 and I actually camped on the grounds until we raised that amount. This year our goal is $20,000. Hopefully we’ll reach that amount and I can sleep in my own bed,” Counihan smiled. To shelter an animal for one day costs the DCHS $15. The county’s local veterinarians provide a variety of discounted and free services to assist in caring for the animals.
“Like everyone, we are faced with rising costs. Without the support of the community we could not do our job. We are so grateful to our staff, board, volunteers, donors, and the adopting families for their contributions to the DCHS,” concluded Counihan. “Together we can make a difference.”
In an effort to reach out to northern Door County, a volunteer orientation will be held on Tuesday, May 20th at 10:00 a.m. The event will be held in the Sister Bay Fire Station. Anyone interested in volunteering at the DCHS is urged to attend.
For additional information about the Door County Humane Society call 920.746.1111 or visit www.doorcountywihumanesociety.org.

Eating at The Coyote

Just walked in The Coyote Roadhouse in Baileys Harbor - eating dinner here - maybe ribs? Great little place on Kangaroo Lake. Sitting at the oval middle table closet to deck, watching the shore, waiting for a friend, Bruce who owns the Lull-Abi Inn in Egg Harbor, to join us. Ah - here he is! Come on over - it's only 7:40 PM!

We are at Casey's in Egg Harbor and just met the new owners. We saw some activity and went in to investigate. New window going in in the dining room, and new smoker in for the BBQ. Bar might open on April 18th! Lookin' good!

Heard on the Street - April 12 2008!

We just learned that Beowulf Lodge in Fish Creek has been purchased by Greg and Denise Stillman - two folks who have loads of lodging management experience. They plan to upgrade the lodge and change the name to Parkwood Lodge.

"We will be replacing all of the exterior windows, some of the siding and painting the exterior.” Improvements will also be made to the indoor pool area including new HVAC and a new finish on the walls and pool deck. Plans are to continue to make improvements and re-invest in the property over the next several years.

We think this is very cool, and we are confident that the Parkwood Lodge will be better than ever!

So Look for PARKWOOD LODGE in Fish Creek now!

Heard on the Street . . . April 8 2008

Well, we exchanged emails with the current owners of Leathem Smith Lodge in Sturgeon Bay, and confirmed that the two owners have decided to retire after many years running the inn (Chuck and Mary) and that the inn right now is closed and for sale.

We loved the inn, restaurant and the folks who ran it. We'll miss them.

Heard on the Street (April)

Good news in Egg Harbor! Casey's Inn Supper Club has been purchased and will be open for the season! And, the best news is that the folks over at Pelletier's Restaurant (fish boils and lots more) in Fish Creek have purchased it! They have a tremendous amount of first-class restaurant experience, and will continue to run Pelletier's too - so we are looking forward to some super things at Casey's!

This is great for Egg Harbor!
