Christmas at the Door Family Holiday Show
December 23 at Door Community Auditorium

Presenting some of the Peninsula’s most talented performing artists, Christmas at the Door features a delightful original musical variety show with entertainment for the entire family just in time for the holidays. The performance, on the Door Community Auditorium Mainstage, is Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 7 pm. All tickets are $10.

Theatre goers will sit in on a mock Door Community Auditorium Board of Directors meeting where the Board ponders various entertainment options for a holiday show, only to have those options come to life on stage.

Performances include original works, as well as songs of the season and a selection from Wind in the Willows, from Paul Sills’ Story Theatre.

Featured during the two hour show are names well known to Door County residents and visitors alike, as well as a few surprises.

Norb Blei reads an original work featuring Door County tales. Soprano Cynthia Stiehl is accompanied by Judy Jackson on the grand piano. pat mAcdonald, known for his work on Steel Bridge Fest, brings his unique style to the stage. Former Door County Idol winners Lilly Larsen, Devin Thomas and Matt Burress will be on hand.

Accomplished singer/musician/songwriter Katie Dahl teams with Julian Hagen in a special duet. Dahl returns to DCA on Saturday, January 30 at 7 pm as one of the stars of the annual Fireside Coffeehouse series. Lynn Gudmundsen, who opens the Coffeehouse series on Saturday, January 16 at 7 pm, accompanies the singing of the original composition “Christmas at the Door.”

Jeanne Kuhns, Door County Magazine’s Female Musician of the Year, performs and leads the audience in a traditional closing carol. Also joining in the fun are the Gibraltar Madrigal Singers and a group of Gibraltar elementary students in a selection from Wind in the Willows, directed by Rich Higdon. Higdon closes out the DCA Coffeehouse series with Michael Ammons on Saturday, March 27.

Performing the roles of the Auditorium Board are actual board members Kaaren Northrop, Larry Thoreson, Dick Burress, Bill Goldammer, Collin Dahl, Peter Diltz, David Eliot, Jill Herlache, Jill Lhost, and Gary Straub.

The show was written and directed by Thoreson; Kristy Nelson is the producer.

Tickets for Christmas at the Door are $10 and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920 868-2728), or via the Web, www.dcauditorium.org. Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on State Highway 42.

CINNAMON WINDMILL IN EGG HARBOR SUPPORTS DOOR COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY THROUGH
SALES OF SHELTER MERCHANDISE.

The weekends of December 11-13 and 18-20, Cinnamon Windmill, located in the
Main Street Shops in downtown Egg Harbor will be supporting the Door County
Humane Society through sales of DCHS's leftover 2009 merchandise.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of this merchandise, which includes DCHS
merchandise apparel, hats, balls, leashes and mousepads goes right back to
the shelter.

"I do it for the animals, plain and simple," said Jan Luser, Owner of
Cinnamon Windmill. "Business owners don't always have the time for hands on
volunteer work. This is just one small way that I could help this very
worthy organization."

Carrie Counihan, Director of the Door County Humane Society, is excited to
see the event come back again this year. "The shelter staff is so fortunate
to have the backing of the Door County business community. There are so
many fundraisers, such as this one at Cinnamon Windmill, that help offset
our operating costs and give year round exposure to our shelter. We are
very grateful for their support."

Cinnamon Windmill is located in the Main Street Shops in downtown Egg
Harbor. Jan Luser has operated her shop, which carries a variety of fun and
inspirational gifts, for the past 18 years. Winter hours are Friday,
Saturday & Sunday from 10am-4pm. For more information call

DOOR COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY OPEN HOUSE ON DEC. 12

Stockings are hung on each kennel door, and the Humane Society lobby
is brightly decorated around every cat cage. Preparations are
underway for the annual Door County Humane Society Open House, set for
Saturday, December 12 from noon to 4:00pm. All DCHS members and those
who are curious about the shelter are invited to see first-hand how
the homeless pets of Door County are cared for until reunited with
their families, or adopted into a devoted new home.

Lots of loving pets, good conversation, and light refreshments are
promised for those who attend the Open House at the DCHS facility
across from Cherryland Airport at 3475 Park Drive (County PD). This
is an informal and relaxed opportunity to visit the shelter and meet
the people who are dedicated to the abandoned and lost animals of Door
County. Questions are welcome!

More than 700 animals a year find tender attention, medical care,
regular food, and warm beds at the Door County Humane Society, and the
need is outgrowing the space available. The Humane Society depends on
private donations to cover 95% of its yearly budget, so a donation of
cash, cat litter, Purina Cat Chow, or paper towels would be much
appreciated. For those looking for a special gift, DCHS logo T-shirts
and caps will be available for purchase – a colorful way to support
the shelter.

Thanksgiving Day Parade - Jacksonport!

Here is a fun and meaningful event - we love this little parade! This press release just in!

Annual Jacksonport Thanksgiving Parade
Tradition of “neighbors helping neighbors” continues into 13th year

Jacksonport, WI – While thousands of Wisconsin families gather at the dining room table for a home-cooked meal or around the big screen TV to watch the Packers take on the Lions, one local boy and his family will spend it in the ICU. However, his struggle will not go unnoticed at Jacksonport’s Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade and Fund Raiser, now entering its 13th year. The parade kicks off at noon from the Jacksonport Fire Department.

Since 1997, the Jacksonport Thanksgiving Parade has delighted spectators with its quirky local flavor as well as collecting money for a family in need. Parade organizers didn’t have to look too far this year to find a member of our community who could use a helping hand. Rafael Phillips, the three year old son of Amy & Dave Phillips, remains hospitalized suffering from complications due to viral meningitis and encephalitis. Rafael has been in a Green Bay hospital since early September, and his family is struggling with the new challenges.

The Jacksonport Thanksgiving Parade, a fun-loving tradition started by Jeri Taylor and Verlin Kiehnau, grounds itself in the notion of neighbors helping neighbors, while getting together to have a good time. “The first year that we held the parade, we threw bird seed because we didn’t think anyone would come,” said Taylor, “but every year it gets bigger, in participation, spectators and “heart”.

Realizing what they could do for their community, the parade committee decided they would choose a local charity or family in need every year. Past parades have raised money for “Feed My People,” breast cancer research, to help the Jacksonport Fire Department purchase a new defibulator, and a young mother with stage four brain cancer. The committee also makes it a priority every year to adopt a family for Christmas, delighting not only in the spirit of the season but knowing that for at least one family, the world will look a little brighter that morning.

Parade viewers can expect the same blend of eclectic floats and characters mixed with a traditional Jacksonport fire truck, color guard, maybe a camel and of course Santa. Participation in the parade is encouraged!

The Phillips family was chosen as this year’s recipient of Jacksonport Parade’s fund raising proceeds because their story exemplifies the spirit in which this parade was founded. The parade starts at the Jacksonport Fire Station, takes a right on Highway 57 to Mike’s Port Pub where it turns around and heads down to the Square Rigger and then finally ends up at J.J.’s of Jacksonport. J.J.’s will be open during and after the parade. One of the best things about the parade is that as a spectator you can see it up to three times in its 4 block journey.

Anyone wishing to participate in the parade should be at the Jacksonport Fire Station by 11:30 on the 26th. For more information please contact Jeri Taylor 920-823-2075.

WILKINS & OLANDER HOSTS JEWELRY DESIGNER PATRICIA LOCKE APPEARANCE

On Saturday, October 3rd, from 2pm - 4pm, Wilkins & Olander will host a meet and greet for Chicago-based jewelry designer Patricia Locke. The event will take place at Wilkins & Olander’s Third Avenue location in Sturgeon Bay.

Among America’s premier contemporary jewelry designers, Patricia Locke speaks a distinctive visual language. Locke’s think-for-yourself, statement jewelry blends the depth of fine art with the sensation of fashion at its most provocative. Textural and multi-faceted, her designs reflect the complexity of modern femininity, the confidence and self-possession of a powerful persona.

While Locke’s evocative adornments take inspiration from a wealth of cultural and historic influences – including her own travels, ancient coins, hieroglyphics, architecture, religious totems, and astronomy – she says, “Ultimately, I’m more interested in the future than the past.” Hallmarks of her work include her inspired asymmetry; tantalizing multi-metal combinations; and use of positive-negative space. A master of paradox, Locke’s jewelry is at once handsome and beautiful, organic and geometric, contemporary with heirloom overtones.

Each Patricia Locke collection of earrings, pins, bracelets and necklaces exudes its own personality, with the designer’s creative counterpoint playing around a given theme. Says Patricia, “Creativity is play for me.” Defining characteristics emerge within her jewelry designs, such as mosaics synthesizing influences as diverse as the Arts & Crafts movement and computer technology; architectural principles informing a streamlined space odyssey of “future deco”; or complex, curvaceous forms manifest a lyrical, organic femininity. Regardless of the season, all of Locke’s jewelry has one thing in common: each unique piece stands alone, encouraging individual interpretation.

Self-taught, Patricia Locke had never worked with her hands or taken an art class prior to undertaking what would become her life’s work in jewelry design. She designed her first pieces, fine jewelry in sterling silver and gold in 1971, working largely by private commission for several years. By 1979, the desire to reach a wider audience prompted Locke’s first designer costume jewelry collection, which she personally – and quickly – sold one-on-one to prominent galleries and retailers. Locke’s jewelry is now handcrafted by a team of 25 artisans outside of Chicago, Illinois.

Carol Overland, owner of Wilkins & Olander adds, “Patricia Locke is one of the most popular jewelry lines at Wilkins & Olander – so popular that we’ve carried it for over 17 years! We’re so fortunate to have Patricia come visit us here in Sturgeon Bay. She doesn’t do many public appearances and I’m sure her fans in Door County will jump at the chance to meet her in person.

Since 1990, Wilkins & Olander has been a purveyor of distinctive updated traditional sportswear, shoes and accessories for women. Visit the boutique’s Sturgeon Bay location at 120 N. Third Avenue or in Fish Creek’s Founders Square on Main Street. For hours and inquiries, please contact the Sturgeon Bay shop at 920-868-3168, or the Fish Creek shop at 920-743-3137. DCA
Presents
Ed Asner as FDR
Friday, September 25, 8 pm

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected the 32nd president in November, 1932, the United States began an amazing era in its history. An unprecedented four-term president, FDR created an aura that continues to consume the American public. On Friday, September 25th, at 8 pm the Door Community Auditorium will welcome FDR onto its stage in the person of actor Ed Asner. In a one-actor performance, Mr. Asner will portray President Roosevelt during the White House years in an illuminating performance.
The recipient of seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards, Mr. Asner is a consummate actor whose range includes roles from the comedic to the dramatic. Although primarily known as Lou Grant, Mary Tyler Moore’s gruff boss on her show of the same name, Mr. Asner has a resume that includes Broadway theatre, and cinematic and television roles. He has provided the voices of countless “characters” for animated roles in both of the latter two medias. Most recently Mr. Asner was the featured voice of Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar movie “Up.”
Although Mr. Asner has achieved universal acclaim for the diversity of the roles he has performed, his roots are firmly planted in the Midwest. Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of a shop owner, Mr. Asner was a fan of the movies. He was an avid athlete and participated in sports. Mr. Asner utilized his now famous voice as the announcer for his high school radio station, a job that provided him a start in the direction of acting following attendance at the University of Chicago.
During the 1950s, Mr. Asner was affiliated with the Playwrights Theatre Club which regrouped as the Compass Players, and eventually segued into the famed Second City. Mr. Asner is today considered a member of the City’s extended family. Countless roles on stage and screen—both small and large—followed.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which premiered in 1970, earned Mr. Asner three of his Emmys. Following the conclusion of the series in 1977, he continued to perform the role of Lou Grant in his own weekly television show.
The role of Captain Davies in the mini-series Roots earned Mr. Asner yet another Emmy Award and the praise of critics. Interestingly, author Alex Haley admitted he had no idea who the actual Captain was, but the actor more than creditably assumed the role.
Throughout his lengthy career, Mr. Asner has continued to be politically active and vocal in both his professional and private lives. He was twice elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, a union established to protect the rights of performers.
Ed Asner as FDR is based on Sunrise at Campobello, a play written by Dory Schary which premiered on Broadway in 1958. The focus of presentation is President Roosevelt’s years in the White House, beginning with the Depression and continuing through the World War II years.
Tickets for Ed Asner as FDR are $50, $45 and $38, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

Door Peninsula Winery Wins Gold!

We received word recently that Door Peninsula Winery of Carlsville has won Gold in a recent competition! Great winery - Read our Review! See below.

Sweet Cherry Gold Highlights Door County Cherry

Door Peninsula Winery recently competed in one of the oldest professional wine competitions, the International Eastern Wine Competition, now in its 33rd year. The 2009 event again topped over 2,200 entries from 16 countries and 34 states. Door Peninsula Winery is proud to bring home the gold for their Sweet Cherry Wine, one of the first and original wines produced by Door Peninsula and a true Door County product.

Fruit wines in the Midwest are strong in the competition that is held at the Finger Lakes region of New York. Even a bronze medal in the competition requires a unanimous panel vote from judges that are wine-knowledgeable professionals, media specialists and wine makers who represent major east coast markets from Miami to Toronto.

Door Peninsula Winery's Sweet Cherry tasted better than the sweet cherry of the other major producers of fruit wine in the nation, St. Julian Winery in Michigan (silver) and St. James Winery in Missouri (bronze).

Door Peninsula Winery also took home a silver for both their popular Blackberry wine and Sunset Splash, a fruit wine blend. Of the blended fruit wine category, the Sunset Splash, that retails for $8.99, tasted better than many $14-26 bottles, again showing that Door Peninsula Winery's wines are of quality and value.

Find wine descriptions for all of Door Peninsula's fruit, fruit-varietals blends, and premium grape wines at www.dcwine.com.

The Music of the 50s and 60s
Rocks the Door Community Auditorium
Saturday, September 12, at 7 pm!!

Ask anyone about the music of the 50s and 60s and it is inevitable that the names Buddy Holly, “Big Bopper” Jiles Richardson, and Ritchie Valens are among the first to receive mention. Unfortunately, all three of the rock and roll legends perished in a plane crash in early 1959. And forever after the tragic night would be recalled as “the night the music died.” But on Saturday, September 12 at 7 pm the music will be alive and rocking at the Door Community Auditorium in a “A Night to Remember!”
Taking the stage in an evening that will long be remembered will be headliners the Doo-Wop Daddies, Kim Marie, Larry Lynne, Junior Brantley, and Door County’s own Gary Lane Van Vorous and Paul Lent. It will be a “Night to Remember” the oldies but goodies…great fun for all ages.
Based in Milwaukee, The Doo-Wop Daddies capture the sound that became a classic genre for the generations to follow. The Daddies have redefined the doo-wop of 60 years ago into a masterful performance that will bring the audience to its feet. The group includes Craig Fairchild, Mark Lansing, Mike Welch, Mike Sturino, and Tom Rupenhoff.
Kim Marie recorded her first songs “Jingle Jump” and “Flip Side” when she was only 17 years old. Early in her career she was performed in Las Vegas including the famour Flamingo Hilton. Recalling the distinctive styles of Brenda lee, Connie Francis, and Laverne Baker, Kim Marie is always a favorite.
Leader of the band Skunks, Larry Lynne was formerly the lead guitarist for the Doo-Wop Daddies, as well as spending time as a Mad Lad, his recordings include “I Recommend Her,” “Little Angel,” and “Me & Happiness.” In concert Lynne performs many of Ricky Nelson’s favorites.
Returning to Door County, Grammy nominated Junior Brantley has recreated the sound and style of Chuck Barry, Little Richard, Jimmy Vaughn, and Jerry Lee Lewis. A former member of the fabulous Thunderbirds, Brantley was member of the group when they recorded “Tough Enough,” which became a worldwide hit.
Door County’s first rock and roll recording artist, Gary Lane Van Vorous graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1960. Leaving the peninsula, Lane--who shortened his name for show business—hit the road with a number of guy groups, most notably The Tokens who recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
In the course of his career, Lane has performed with some of the biggest names in rock and roll, including Gene Pitney, Del Shannon, Lou Christie, and Bobbie Hatfield. Lane credits Dick Clark and Pearl Bailey with providing him with some of the best advice he ever received. “Dick told me to ‘be careful what you sign,’ and Ms. Bailey said ‘honey, just keep on keepin’ on—you’re gonna make it.”
Also a graduate of Gibraltar High School, class of 1979, Paul Lent has toured the Midwest as the lead vocalist for the band “Worlds.” He is the co-founder of the group “After Dark” which has enjoyed regional success, sharing the stage with renowned artists REO Speed Wagon, Starship, Loverboy, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Night Ranger.
Lent was honored with an invitation to sing the National Anthem at Lambeau Field for a Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals home game. Lent will perform the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
From Bill Haley and the Comets to the Righteous Brothers, “A Night to Remember” will recall some of the most memorable singers in rock and roll history…and recall the legends of the 50s and the 60s.
Tickets for “a Night to Remember” are 36/$26 and $20, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

Paula Poundstone in Concert in Fish Creek!

Just received this press release:

______

The Door Community Auditorium
presents
Paula Poundstone in Concert
Saturday, September 5, 2009, 8 pm

Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone, and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone’s ability to create on the spot humor has become the stuff of legend. It is impossible to attend a Paula Poundstone performance without marveling at her ability to interact spontaneously with audience members. And on Saturday, September 5 at 8 pm, Ms. Poundstone will bring her unique brand of humor to the Door Community Auditorium.
Ms. Poundstone’s career as a humorist began in Boston in 1979 when the emerging comedian performed “stand-up” on open-mike nights, supplementing her income with jobs bussing tables and working as a bicycle messenger. It wasn’t long, however, before Ms. Poundstone’s talents were recognized, and five years later she was cast in the movie Hyperspce.
But instead of pursuing a career as an actress, Ms. Poundstone continued to apply her wit to contemporary issues, a perfect match for the nightly talk shows. By 1990, Ms. Poundstone had starred in several HBO specials, as well as a Saturday Night Live show. It proved pivotal to her career. Ms. Poundstone’s first one-hour HBO special earned her a Cable ACE for best comedy special, the first woman ever.
With a spontaneity and clever repartee that hit just the right marks, Ms. Poundstone earned praise from her fans, as well as from critics and her fellow performers. She became a favorite on the talk shows hosts including Jay Leno who hired her to serve as a 1992 Presidential campaign correspondent for his version of the Tonight Show.
One of the most popular panelists on National Public Radio’s weekly news quiz show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me—the recipient of the 2008 prestigious Peabody Award for Broadcasting excellence—Ms. Poundstone’s commentaries can also be heard on NPR’s Morning Edition. They can also be read on the Huffington Post and the comedy site 23/6.
Ms. Poundstone is the author of There’s Nothing In That Book That I Meant to Say, which she describes as “part memoir, part monologue,” and is currently at work on a second. She recently released her first CD entitled I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them In Maine, an hour of comedy recorded live.
Most notably, Ms. Poundstone has also accumulated several “firsts,” most significant among them is being the first woman invited to perform at the distinguished White House Correspondents dinner which is attended by the President. She continues to regularly appear on major talk shows including Late Night with David Lettermen Show and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Ms. Poundstone has also appeared on Garrison Keillor’s radio show A Prairie Home Companion.
With something to say on literally every topic, Paula Poundstone teases the audience, asking them questions, engaging them in a running dialogue. “You know Poundstone’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one—there’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong,” praised the Boston Globe.
Visit http://www.paulapoundstone.com for more information about Paula Poundstone. she is also available on http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/PAULAPOUNDSTONE/
39510582072; twitters can be sent tohttp://twitter.com/PaulaPoundstone.
Tickets for Paula Poundstone are $38/$33 and $28, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance.
