Holly Days Kicks Off the Holidays

November 26-27, 2010

Egg Harbor Business Association presents Holly Days on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. The two-day event kicks off with Breakfast with Santa on Friday, November 26, from 8:30-10:30am at Carrington Pub & Grill at the Landmark Resort. There will be arts and crafts and other fun-filled activities including coloring and cookie decorating. Enjoy a delicious breakfast and, of course, visit with Santa. Prices are $7.99 for ages 12 and up; ages 3-11, $4.50; and 2 and under, free. Great for all ages, you may also enjoy a hayride around the resort property.

Additional Holly Days event highlights include and elf hunt, caroling, horse drawn wagon rides, and a tree lighting ceremony. Children 12 and under may participate in an elf hunt throughout participating retail establishments while shoppers collect tickets while they shop on Friday, November 26, to enter to win Mistle Dough.

Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, children ages 4 -12, are able to purchase holiday gifts for their family at lower than retail prices at the Family Centers of Door County Christmas Store for Children. The children, with the help of Santa's elves on Saturday, November 27, from 12-2pm at the Bertschinger Center, pick out their gifts and wrap them while their parents wait. This provides an element of surprise for all family members and teaches children numerous lessons about budgeting, choices, and giving.

New for 2010 is a tree decorating contest. Area businesses will compete to win ‘Star’ awards.

A Murder Mystery Dinner Theater will be presented in “A Christmas Carol to Die For” on Saturday night at the Landmark Resort. Return to Merry Ole England and that fateful Christmas Eve when Scrooge was transformed by the Spirits of Christmas into a kind and generous soul. Then who would've wanted to kill the old man the very next night? There's a whole village of suspects including his own nephew, the poor clerk and his wife, a half-crocked maid and a local schoolmaster. Check-in, cocktails and mingling begin at 6:30pm. The program usually ends within one hour of the conclusion of dinner (around 9:15pm).

To learn more about Holly Days activities and other events call the Egg Harbor Visitors Center at 920-868-3717 or visit www.EggHarborDoorCounty.org. Save the date for Frosty Fest, January 1, 2011, 1pm parade and 1:30pm Icy Fun Run to benefit the Door County YMCA.

"Quilts . . .the Fabric of Our Past" At Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Thru Oct. 8th!

We just received this press release from the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse's Patti Podgers: Through October 8th!

Quilts…the Fabric of Our Past

Plain and fancy, colorful or darkly-hued, the quilts sewn by the women of the mid-18th century are the reflection of life in frontier villages across America. With the pull of thread through layers of fabric and padding, grandmothers, mothers, and their daughters created comfort in the warmth of a quilt.

Honoring the tradition of those early settlers, the Trillium Quilt Guild shares the legacy of these hardy women in an exhibit of quilts at the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum. Continuing through October 8, “Quilts…the Fabric of Our Past” is a collection of 19 hand-sewn pieces dating from 1880 to the present. Demonstrating the variety of styles, fabrics, and techniques of generations of quilters, the exhibit is a walk through history.

“Quilting is such an important part of our history,” said Eagle Bluff Lighthouse curator/manager Patti Podgers. “To have so many quilts displayed in the lighthouse is a real treat. Julia Duclon, the wife of Eagle Bluff’s second keeper was well-known as an excellent quilter so it appropriate that we host this exhibit in her honor.”

The art of quilt-making began in the 13th century when linen bed covers gained popularity in Europe and Asia. The art of quilt-making was introduced to America in the 18th and 19th centuries following the industrial revolution. Machine-woven fabrics freed women from the labors of weaving fabric. Most of American’s early quilts were constructed of wool and cotton. Women of all ages and social rank soon took up the needle.

As quilting gained in popularity, a shift in style occurred. By the 1850s “whole cloth” quilts with an overall design were replaced with pieced blocks sown together to form a cover. The introduction of the Singer sewing machine in 1851 was a boon to quilters, though it was rare that a quilt was sown entirely by machine.

“The history of quilting in the United States is truly a story of the foraging of a nation,” explained Podgers. “Wounded Civil War soldiers were delivered home to their loved ones in quilts stained with their blood. Quilts were sold at fairs to raise money to free slaves and support the war effort. There were even maps to freedom embedded in the pattern of a quilt.”

During the Victorian Era, the crazy quilt was the rage. “That is the type of quilt Julia Duclon favored. They are very detailed and embellished, and were quite creative and artistic. Most often they were used as an ornamental covering for a piano or table, but rarely for a bed,” Podgers explained.

Traveling the desolate prairies and plains of the frontier, the women captured the flight of birds across the sky, a maple leaf turning from green to gold, the swirl of a butter churn in their quilts. The fabric of their lives told stories of love--the wedding ring, and friendship--the charm quilt. Wrapped in a quilt, fallen soldiers were laid to rest.

“Quilts tell us stories, stories that we all can cherish and hold dear. They truly are the fabric of our lives,” Podgers concluded. “I hope everyone has an opportunity to visit Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and experience the story we tell through these beautiful quilts.”

We jsut rceived this press release from Eagle Harbor Lighthouse's Patti Podger

Trillium Quilt Guild members participating in “Quilts…the Fabric of Our Past” include: Valerie Billington, Fran Burton, Julie Fiedler (exhibit coordinator), Pat Flaherty, Judy Giessel, Lynn Lees, and Sally Nesser.

The Trillium Quilt Guild meets at 10 am the second and fourth Thursday mornings of each month year round. Meetings are held in the Sister Bay Fire Station on Mill Road. New members are always welcome. For membership information contact Miriam Malenius, 920.839.2772.

The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum is located in Peninsula State Park. A sticker is required to enter the park. The lighthouse is open from 10 am – 4 pm; tours are available every half hour through 3:30 pm. Admission to the lighthouse is $5 adult, $2 student, and $1 youth. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Call Patti Podgers at 920.495.7330 or 920.421.3636 for additional information.

Art in Harbor View Park - Egg Harbor

Harbor View Park in Egg Harbor and the new marina are looking great!  Here is some info on the on-loan art fixtures in the park - all new!
_________

Dave Riemer's kinetic copper wind sculptures were recently installed in Egg Harbor's Harbor View Park. These three complex, contemporary outdoor art designs, heroic in size, move with the slightest breeze from the bay. As Aquarium, Maelstrom and Migration catch the wind, they cast mesmerizing geometric shadows throughout the park. These pieces are on loan by the artist for 3 years with installation and transportation fees for this project sponsored by Kathy Mand Beck and Tom Mand of Dovetail Gallery. There is no charge to the village property owners for the creation, installation or upkeep of these public pieces of art.

Birch Creek receives Arts Board grant

Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Egg Harbor, is pleased to announce that it has received a grant of $26,825 from the Wisconsin Arts Board. This grant, awarded through the Creation & Presentation Program, supports Birch Creek’s mission of providing intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians.

The ongoing commitment from the State of Wisconsin to fund the arts in local communities is vital. Birch Creek will serve more than 11,000 people in Door County with performances and educational programs in 2010.

Additionally, local school students in all five Door County public schools have benefited from Birch Creek’s annual “Artists in the Schools” outreach program, which has served more than 3,000 students since its inception in 2001-2002. “Artists in the Schools” engages youth in learning a wide variety of music from our professional faculty members, and in the ethnic and social lessons that surround each genre’s history.

Birch Creek’s evening concerts and daytime outreach concerts, made possible by Arts Board funding, allow the Egg Harbor school to bring nationally-known musicians to Door County such as Robert Hanford, Concertmaster of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, Chicago; as well as honored Wisconsin artists, like Vicki Peterson Jenks, Percussion Program Ensemble Director with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, Madison.

The grant programs through the Arts Board were retooled in 2008 so that meaningful funding could be provided to the greatest number of Wisconsin communities, including communities with rural populations like Door County. The State of Wisconsin recognizes that all communities, regardless of their populations, bring enjoyment and value to Wisconsin citizens.

Birch Creek has been a Door County education and entertainment center for 35 years.

Wisconsin Arts Board grants are awarded on a matching basis. Organizations that receive Arts Board funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. The Wisconsin Arts Board is the state agency that nurtures creativity, cultivates expression, promotes the arts, supports the arts in education, stimulates community and economic development, and serves as a resource for people of every culture and heritage in Wisconsin’s communities.
