WILKINS & OLANDER HOSTS JEWELRY DESIGNER PATRICIA LOCKE APPEARANCE

On Saturday, October 3rd, from 2pm - 4pm, Wilkins & Olander will host a meet and greet for Chicago-based jewelry designer Patricia Locke. The event will take place at Wilkins & Olander’s Third Avenue location in Sturgeon Bay.

Among America’s premier contemporary jewelry designers, Patricia Locke speaks a distinctive visual language. Locke’s think-for-yourself, statement jewelry blends the depth of fine art with the sensation of fashion at its most provocative. Textural and multi-faceted, her designs reflect the complexity of modern femininity, the confidence and self-possession of a powerful persona.

While Locke’s evocative adornments take inspiration from a wealth of cultural and historic influences – including her own travels, ancient coins, hieroglyphics, architecture, religious totems, and astronomy – she says, “Ultimately, I’m more interested in the future than the past.” Hallmarks of her work include her inspired asymmetry; tantalizing multi-metal combinations; and use of positive-negative space. A master of paradox, Locke’s jewelry is at once handsome and beautiful, organic and geometric, contemporary with heirloom overtones.

Each Patricia Locke collection of earrings, pins, bracelets and necklaces exudes its own personality, with the designer’s creative counterpoint playing around a given theme. Says Patricia, “Creativity is play for me.” Defining characteristics emerge within her jewelry designs, such as mosaics synthesizing influences as diverse as the Arts & Crafts movement and computer technology; architectural principles informing a streamlined space odyssey of “future deco”; or complex, curvaceous forms manifest a lyrical, organic femininity. Regardless of the season, all of Locke’s jewelry has one thing in common: each unique piece stands alone, encouraging individual interpretation.

Self-taught, Patricia Locke had never worked with her hands or taken an art class prior to undertaking what would become her life’s work in jewelry design. She designed her first pieces, fine jewelry in sterling silver and gold in 1971, working largely by private commission for several years. By 1979, the desire to reach a wider audience prompted Locke’s first designer costume jewelry collection, which she personally – and quickly – sold one-on-one to prominent galleries and retailers. Locke’s jewelry is now handcrafted by a team of 25 artisans outside of Chicago, Illinois.

Carol Overland, owner of Wilkins & Olander adds, “Patricia Locke is one of the most popular jewelry lines at Wilkins & Olander – so popular that we’ve carried it for over 17 years! We’re so fortunate to have Patricia come visit us here in Sturgeon Bay. She doesn’t do many public appearances and I’m sure her fans in Door County will jump at the chance to meet her in person.

Since 1990, Wilkins & Olander has been a purveyor of distinctive updated traditional sportswear, shoes and accessories for women. Visit the boutique’s Sturgeon Bay location at 120 N. Third Avenue or in Fish Creek’s Founders Square on Main Street. For hours and inquiries, please contact the Sturgeon Bay shop at 920-868-3168, or the Fish Creek shop at 920-743-3137. DCA
Presents
Ed Asner as FDR
Friday, September 25, 8 pm

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected the 32nd president in November, 1932, the United States began an amazing era in its history. An unprecedented four-term president, FDR created an aura that continues to consume the American public. On Friday, September 25th, at 8 pm the Door Community Auditorium will welcome FDR onto its stage in the person of actor Ed Asner. In a one-actor performance, Mr. Asner will portray President Roosevelt during the White House years in an illuminating performance.
The recipient of seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards, Mr. Asner is a consummate actor whose range includes roles from the comedic to the dramatic. Although primarily known as Lou Grant, Mary Tyler Moore’s gruff boss on her show of the same name, Mr. Asner has a resume that includes Broadway theatre, and cinematic and television roles. He has provided the voices of countless “characters” for animated roles in both of the latter two medias. Most recently Mr. Asner was the featured voice of Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar movie “Up.”
Although Mr. Asner has achieved universal acclaim for the diversity of the roles he has performed, his roots are firmly planted in the Midwest. Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of a shop owner, Mr. Asner was a fan of the movies. He was an avid athlete and participated in sports. Mr. Asner utilized his now famous voice as the announcer for his high school radio station, a job that provided him a start in the direction of acting following attendance at the University of Chicago.
During the 1950s, Mr. Asner was affiliated with the Playwrights Theatre Club which regrouped as the Compass Players, and eventually segued into the famed Second City. Mr. Asner is today considered a member of the City’s extended family. Countless roles on stage and screen—both small and large—followed.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which premiered in 1970, earned Mr. Asner three of his Emmys. Following the conclusion of the series in 1977, he continued to perform the role of Lou Grant in his own weekly television show.
The role of Captain Davies in the mini-series Roots earned Mr. Asner yet another Emmy Award and the praise of critics. Interestingly, author Alex Haley admitted he had no idea who the actual Captain was, but the actor more than creditably assumed the role.
Throughout his lengthy career, Mr. Asner has continued to be politically active and vocal in both his professional and private lives. He was twice elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, a union established to protect the rights of performers.
Ed Asner as FDR is based on Sunrise at Campobello, a play written by Dory Schary which premiered on Broadway in 1958. The focus of presentation is President Roosevelt’s years in the White House, beginning with the Depression and continuing through the World War II years.
Tickets for Ed Asner as FDR are $50, $45 and $38, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.
