DCA Presents Songwriter Double Bill July 15: Josh Ritter and Brett Dennen

On Saturday, July 15, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present two extraordinary singer-songwriters, Josh Ritter and Brett Dennen. Ritter and Dennen, who have never appeared in Door County before, will take the stage at 8 p.m., performing separately in double-bill concert format.

Beloved by fans worldwide for his ebullient performances and inventive songwriting, Idaho native Josh Ritter has released seven albums over the course of his career. They’ve drawn acclaim from fans, critics, and fellow writers alike—novelist Stephen King called Ritter’s landmark album “The Animal Years” “the most exuberant outburst of imagery since Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.’”

The New York Times calls Josh Ritter “a slinger of serious ideas and high-flown imagery.”

Ritter is joined at DCA by folk-pop songwriter Brett Dennen, who honed his craft at summer camps in the Sierra Nevada foothills. With a knack for hooky melodies and joyful lyrics, Dennen has made a name for himself nationwide. He is fresh off the May release of “Por Favor,” an intimate and revealing new album produced by Dave Cobb, fresh off his Grammy-winning work with Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell.

According to NPR, Dennen is “capable of cranking out big, beautiful pop songs … [capturing] both the ornate and the simple.” Paste Magaazine agrees, writing that Dennen creates “nimble grooves, creamy choruses, and vocal performances of immediacy and genuine feeling … carefree soulfulness that recalls Van Morrison.”

The July 15 concert is made possible with support from major sponsors Al Johnson’s Restaurant & Butik, Bob and Paula Cummings, and Peninsula Pulse.

Josh Ritter and Brett Dennen will perform at DCA at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15. Tickets for the concert range from $35 to $65. Peninsula School of Art (PenArt) is proud to display artwork created by youths attending their 2015 Summer Studios for Young Artists workshops, as well as the School’s Family Art Days outreach program, in the upcoming Art of the Family exhibition, on view starting October 23 at The Link Children’s Art Gallery at Door Community Auditorium.

Artwork from PenArt’s summer youth workshops includes pieces created in the fine art media of painting & drawing, ceramics (hand building and on the potter’s wheel), animation, sculpture, and printmaking.

Contributions to Art of the Family from September’s Family Art Day follow the theme of “#ArtofTheFamily,” with family members working together to draw a “selfie” of their family enjoying a special memory from within a paper iPhone-shaped frame. In a world where the “selfie” self-portrait is seen consistently on Facebook and Instagram newsfeeds, PenArt stepped away from a focus on the individual to concentrate on what truly makes Door County unique – the families that support a strong arts-centered community.

After discussing their ideas, families drew a “#familie” that expressed what makes their bond unique. Those visiting the exhibition are encouraged to create and add their own #familie to the Link Gallery walls. By doing so, they join the featured artists of Art of the Family in a celebration of the beauty that is created when families collaborate their creativity and express their feelings through art, and then share it with the Door County community.

Since PenArt’s founding summer in 1965, the commitment to providing meaningful and fun curriculum for young artists remains strong. The summer youth arts program has grown from only two children’s workshops to today’s nearly 40 classes for children ages 3.5 to 17 years old, including those with family-centered activities.

The Link Gallery of Children’s Art is Door County’s first exhibit space dedicated to the showing of artwork that portrays the world through the eyes of children.  Exhibits can be viewed from noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and from noon to show time on show nights.  The Link Gallery of Children’s Art is located at 3926 Hwy 42 in Fish Creek, inside the Door Community Auditorium.

Gaelic Storm to Perform at DCA on Aug 15

World-renown Celtic band, Gaelic Storm, will perform at the Door Community Auditorium on Sunday, August 15, at 8:00 p.m.

If you’ve seen the movie, Titanic, then you’ve already seen Gaelic Storm. Cast as the “steerage band” in the legendary movie over ten years ago, Gaelic Storm has since made an international name for themselves in the music industry, having played to audiences numbering in the millions to date. Their unique Celtic sound, created by cultural instruments such as the bagpipes, Celtic drums, and the fiddle, as well as their electrifying concerts that offer unparalleled entertainment for all ages, make Gaelic Storm your perfect summer concert experience at the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek, WI.

The band officially took form on St. Patrick’s Day, 1996, when Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger performed at a local pub in Santa Monica, California. Roots-Rocker John Hiatt Takes Auditorium Stage

The Door Community Auditorium will come alive on Monday, July 5, when legendary songwriter John Hiatt takes the stage with his all-star band The Combo. In more than three decades on the music scene, Hiatt has won a devoted following with his own vibrant brand of roots-rock. Hiatt's passionate, gravelly voice is an ideal vehicle for his finely rendered songs, which have been made famous by artists like Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, and Linda Ronstadt.

Equal parts bluesman and wordsmith, John Hiatt has cultivated a reputation over the years as a songwriter's songwriter, able to blend a poet's attention to detail with a rocker's knack for catchy melodies and unforgettable hooks. His hit song "Thing Called Love" (as performed by Bonnie Raitt) rose almost to the top of the U.S. charts in 1987, and he has received eleven Grammy nominations since then. In 2008, Hiatt received the AMA Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, and earlier this year he released his eighteenth studio album, The Open Road.

Hiatt’s band, The Combo, features Doug Lancio on guitar, Kenneth Blevins on drums, and Patrick O'Hearn on bass. “They are the best band I've ever had,” Hiatt told an interviewer about The Combo. “When it comes down to it, the sum is greater than the parts, and when we get together onstage, we ‘make the magic happen.’”

Auditorium board president Kaaren Northrop reflected the growing excitement about Hiatt's performance when she said, "My friend Bruce Hill, who owns the Lull-Abi Motel in Egg Harbor, was so excited when he found out John Hiatt was coming that he hired someone to run the office so he could come to the show! Different Drums of Ireland Takes

To DCA Mainstage, March 5

Different Drums of Ireland, a band composed of five musicians, was created in 1992 as a community relations project in Derry, Northern Ireland. Featuring the Lambeg and Bodhran drums, as well as the guitar, snares, long drum, pipes, and vocals, Different Drums of Ireland celebrates the musical traditions, customs, and sounds of that wee part of the world, crossing boundaries in an effort to promote peace and unity. The group makes its Door County premier appearance on the Door Community Auditorium Mainstage, Friday, March 5 at 8 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students under 18.

The music also features the Uilleann or elbow pipes, whistles, guitar, snares, long drum, four voices and is driven by the engine of the African djembe. Adding myriad percussion and other instruments to original and traditional songs makes a unique and exciting combination of traditions and sounds. A unique celebration of cultural diversity and linkages.

The band has played across the world, for everyone from US & Irish presidents to school children - The message is the same: Celebrate that which makes us different and that which bonds us together.

People with long memories will remember Roy from his early days with show bands and in the 70's with folk band Chaff. He moved to North America in 1978 and toured extensively with Fiddlers Elbow and later The Rambling Boys of Pleasure.

Roy conceived and founded Different Drums in 1991 as a community relations project and has led its development since.

Dolores O’Hare
Dolores is a multi-instrumentalist playing Uillean (elbow) pipes, whistles, fiddle, button and piano accordion, concertina and Bodhran. She comes from Mayobridge in County Down, an area steeped in music which has also produced the renowned Sands Family. She is a talented teacher, her pupils achieving great success in the Ulster and All-Ireland Fleadhs.

Stephen Matier
Stephen is one of the earliest members of Different Drums and has been involved in music for most of his life. He is a native of East Belfast and has lived in Belfast for the last 10 years after spending time in England and Derry. He began playing music as a schoolboy in a variety of rock bands, most notably the band that went on to be known as "Ghost of an American Airman" He then found the blues with Noella Hutton. Once involved in Different Drums he has been exploring the roots of Irish and world music and has interests in Middle Eastern and American roots music.

Paul Marshall
Paul is an instrument inventor, multi-percussionist and instrument designer for STOMP. With Different Drums since 2002 he brings a wealth of percussive experience having played drumset for 40+ years and hand percussion for 30+ years. He has wide experience in music recording, editing and production and is responsible for the band's website and management of the band's audio/video/image archive.

Richard Campbell
Richard is the most recent addition to Different Drums and sports the official band hairstyle. Hailing from New Buildings in Co L'Derry, Richard comes from three generations of competitive pipers and drummers, having learned his snare drumming in Bready Ulster Scots Pipe Band, Co. Richard plays marching snare, Lambeg, djembe and longdrum. He joined the band in december 2004 and has brought new sounds and influences to the group.

DOOR COMMUNITY AUDITORIUM TO HOST BENEFIT

FOR HAITIAN RELIEF, SATURDAY, JANUARY 23

In response to a groundswell of community desire to assist the victims of the Haiti earthquake, the Door Community Auditorium will host a benefit concert Saturday, January 23 at 7 pm. Doors will open at 6 pm, admission is free and no tickets are needed.

All monies collected from free will donations will be sent to the local Red Cross agency with designation to be used for Haitian relief. All contributions, either cash or check, are tax deductible. Representatives from the local Red Cross chapter will be on hand.

Larry Thoreson, vice president of the Auditorium board of directors and producer of the holiday show Christmas at the Door, is organizing the effort. He is currently contacting local professional and amateur performers and will confirm their appearance during the week. The DCA Web site, www.dcauditorium.org, will contain up to the minute postings of changes. Interested individuals are urged to visit the site at their convenience for updates.

“We will have a wonderful, fun filled evening,” Thoreson said, “but we must remain mindful of the reason for the gathering.”

Accomplished Singer/Musician/Songwriter, Katie Dahl,
Stars at DCA Fireside Coffeehouse Concert, Saturday, Jan. 30

When Katie Dahl picked up a guitar for the first time, it was the music of Cheryl Wheeler, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams—all of her favorites—that she choose to play. Today, the accomplished singer/musician/songwriter no longer needs to perform other artists’ music. She brings her music and her unique style to the Door Community Auditorium Fireside Coffeehouse on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 pm. Tickets are $14.

Last July, Katie celebrated the release of her debut record, County Line, which she has described as “a folk-infused exploration of love and the American landscape.” The album contains two cover songs--"Gibraltar Town," by Katie’s songwriting hero, Fred Alley, and "Paradise," by John Prine--and eight Dahl originals, including "America" (a conflicted love song to the titular nation), "Katharine Hepburn Waltz" (a whimsical look at the difficulties of falling in love), "Southern Star" (a Shakespeare-infused journey into the mind of John Wilkes Booth), and "Freedom Song" (a 1960s-style belt-it-out singalong). These songs epitomize the thoughtful, literate lyricism and straightforward melodic sense that characterizes all of Katie’s songwriting.

Katie was 19 years old when she slipped on the ice at her southern Minnesota alma mater, Carleton College, and broke her wrist. Forced to take a two-month break from playing the oboe, Katie decided to use her newfound free time to learn guitar, strumming the strings with her stiff right hand and teaching herself chord positions with the other. She started out playing covers of songs by the songwriters she’s always loved and gradually gathered the courage to begin writing songs of her own.

Since then, this honey-voiced musician has turned her musical attention entirely to the acoustic folk music she’s always loved, singing everywhere from the cliff country of Mali, West Africa, to a canal boat in southern France, to an outdoor theater nestled in the pines of northern Wisconsin. Katie currently makes her home in northern Door County, and is fast making a name for herself with her rich alto voice, honest vocals, intricate fingerpicking, and incisive lyricism.

One reviewer enthused, “In a rich alto voice, Dahl brilliantly paints to life vivid scenes of cherry orchards, wide-open deserts and early-morning cities, as well as characters of depth, introspection and purpose.

Christmas at the Door Family Holiday Show
December 23 at Door Community Auditorium

Presenting some of the Peninsula’s most talented performing artists, Christmas at the Door features a delightful original musical variety show with entertainment for the entire family just in time for the holidays. The performance, on the Door Community Auditorium Mainstage, is Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 7 pm. All tickets are $10.

Theatre goers will sit in on a mock Door Community Auditorium Board of Directors meeting where the Board ponders various entertainment options for a holiday show, only to have those options come to life on stage.

Performances include original works, as well as songs of the season and a selection from Wind in the Willows, from Paul Sills’ Story Theatre.

Featured during the two hour show are names well known to Door County residents and visitors alike, as well as a few surprises.

Norb Blei reads an original work featuring Door County tales. Soprano Cynthia Stiehl is accompanied by Judy Jackson on the grand piano. pat mAcdonald, known for his work on Steel Bridge Fest, brings his unique style to the stage. Former Door County Idol winners Lilly Larsen, Devin Thomas and Matt Burress will be on hand.

Accomplished singer/musician/songwriter Katie Dahl teams with Julian Hagen in a special duet. Dahl returns to DCA on Saturday, January 30 at 7 pm as one of the stars of the annual Fireside Coffeehouse series. Lynn Gudmundsen, who opens the Coffeehouse series on Saturday, January 16 at 7 pm, accompanies the singing of the original composition “Christmas at the Door.”

Jeanne Kuhns, Door County Magazine’s Female Musician of the Year, performs and leads the audience in a traditional closing carol. Also joining in the fun are the Gibraltar Madrigal Singers and a group of Gibraltar elementary students in a selection from Wind in the Willows, directed by Rich Higdon. Higdon closes out the DCA Coffeehouse series with Michael Ammons on Saturday, March 27.

Performing the roles of the Auditorium Board are actual board members Kaaren Northrop, Larry Thoreson, Dick Burress, Bill Goldammer, Collin Dahl, Peter Diltz, David Eliot, Jill Herlache, Jill Lhost, and Gary Straub.

The show was written and directed by Thoreson; Kristy Nelson is the producer.

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected the 32nd president in November, 1932, the United States began an amazing era in its history. An unprecedented four-term president, FDR created an aura that continues to consume the American public. On Friday, September 25th, at 8 pm the Door Community Auditorium will welcome FDR onto its stage in the person of actor Ed Asner. In a one-actor performance, Mr. Asner will portray President Roosevelt during the White House years in an illuminating performance.
The recipient of seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards, Mr. Asner is a consummate actor whose range includes roles from the comedic to the dramatic. Although primarily known as Lou Grant, Mary Tyler Moore’s gruff boss on her show of the same name, Mr. Asner has a resume that includes Broadway theatre, and cinematic and television roles. He has provided the voices of countless “characters” for animated roles in both of the latter two medias. Most recently Mr. Asner was the featured voice of Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar movie “Up.”
Although Mr. Asner has achieved universal acclaim for the diversity of the roles he has performed, his roots are firmly planted in the Midwest. Growing up in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of a shop owner, Mr. Asner was a fan of the movies. He was an avid athlete and participated in sports. Mr. Asner utilized his now famous voice as the announcer for his high school radio station, a job that provided him a start in the direction of acting following attendance at the University of Chicago.
During the 1950s, Mr. Asner was affiliated with the Playwrights Theatre Club which regrouped as the Compass Players, and eventually segued into the famed Second City. Mr. Asner is today considered a member of the City’s extended family. Countless roles on stage and screen—both small and large—followed.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which premiered in 1970, earned Mr. Asner three of his Emmys. Following the conclusion of the series in 1977, he continued to perform the role of Lou Grant in his own weekly television show.
The role of Captain Davies in the mini-series Roots earned Mr. Asner yet another Emmy Award and the praise of critics. Interestingly, author Alex Haley admitted he had no idea who the actual Captain was, but the actor more than creditably assumed the role.
Throughout his lengthy career, Mr. Asner has continued to be politically active and vocal in both his professional and private lives. He was twice elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, a union established to protect the rights of performers.
Ed Asner as FDR is based on Sunrise at Campobello, a play written by Dory Schary which premiered on Broadway in 1958. The focus of presentation is President Roosevelt’s years in the White House, beginning with the Depression and continuing through the World War II years.

NEW LONDON, CONN—From its home at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the United States Coast Guard Band travels to Fish Creek to present “Liberty for All,” an entertaining evening concert on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Door Community Auditorium at 8 p.m. The 55-member Coast Guard Band is one of our nation’s elite premier military bands and the proud musical representative of the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security.

The musical line-up comprises a striking array of selections, such as Leonard Bernstein’s bitingly satirical Overture to “Candide,” Frank Ticheli’s moving setting of “Amazing Grace,” and the young American composer John Mackey’s “Kingfishers Catch Fire.” James Beckel wrote “Liberty for All” for orchestra and narrator and the Coast Guard Band commissioned the band arrangement. For the narration, Beckel selected moving passages from the prose of Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy.

Two talented soloists are featured in the performance. MUC Joel Flunker is the gifted cornetist in “A Tribute to Bix Beiderbecke” and soprano MU1 Lisa Williamson sings Antonín Dvořák’s “Song to the Moon”—in Czech! The program ends with the stirring “America, the Beautiful,” also with MU1 Williamson as soloist.

With a sound that proves you can go home again, Pure Prairie League is all about great country music. And on Saturday, July 11th at 8 pm, the band that was first formed in 1969 is performing at the Door Community Auditorium in what promises to be a fun-filled concert of memorable music!
As so often happens in the world of music, Pure Prairie League’s founding was all about timing…and the timing was perfect. Playing cover tunes at local bars in southern Ohio, a group of young musicians from southern Ohio were honing their performance skills. Naming their band was as serendipitous as signing their first professional contract.
In 1939 Errol Flynn starred in the western-themed movie Dodge City. Significant to the story line of the film, the Pure Prairie League is a group of elderly temperance women. Thirty years later, then drummer Tom McGail adopted the name for the band that was emerging. And Pure Prairie League was born.
Shortly thereafter, Pure Prairie League was signed by RCA records following an appearance in Cleveland, Ohio. Pure Prairie League, their premier album, was released a year later in 1972. Notably featuring a 1927 Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover, the illustration included an old cowboy named Luke. That cover immediately caught on with the band and has been included on the cover of every Pure Prairie League recording since that first one.
Following the release of that first album, Pure Prairie League has weathered bumps along the road. During the years preceding the conclusion of the Vietnam War, the band temporarily relocated to Canada. Band members changed and RCA dropped the band. But Pure Prairie League fans continued to tune into radio stations where cuts from their second album Bustin’ Out received air time.
RCA capitulated and resigned Pure Prairie League. Shortly after the ink on the contract was dry, Two Lane Highway (1975) was recorded. “Amie,” an ode to a sometime love, was released as a single from the album, and remains a classic to this day.
In the years to follow, Pure Prairie League was met with the challenges of the changing musical landscape. But newcomers like Vince Gill brought inspiration and new ideas to Pure Prairie League. In 1978, their final album under the RCA label, Can’t Hold Back, was recorded. It was strongly influenced by rock, noticeably by the addition of saxophone to the elimination of pedal steel guitar.
The sound may have been an odd pairing, but it worked. And under the Casablanca label Pure Prairie League’s single “Let Me Love You Tonight” from the album Firin’ Up hit the pop charts at #7 and soared to #1 on the contemporary adult charts. And the music continues…
Credited with bringing country music into the mainstream in the mid-1970s, Pure Prairie League has weathered the multiple musical movements to emerge tried and true. And with the release of All in Good Time fans have discovered Pure Prairie League all over again. And the band’s timelessness has been assured.

With Award-Winning Musician and Vocalist Carrie Rodriguez


Shimmering with subtlety, Carrie Rodriguez is an explosive musician, songwriter, and vocalist who defies categorization. Fiddle in hand, the Texas-native’s folksy twang delivers on every song, hitting just the right notes. Performing in concert at the Door Community Auditorium on Friday, June 12 at 8 pm, Carrie Rodriguez will treat the audience to a performance that sparkles with intellect and emotion.
Carrie Rodriguez’s musical journey began in Austin, where as a little girl she began violin lessons rather than submit to mandatory naps. “I remember walking down the hallway and hearing these violins scratching out ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.’ I was immediately drawn to that and came home and told my mom I wanted to take violin lessons,” she said.
The lessons “took” and Rodriguez continued her musical training at Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music. Inspired by family friend Lyle Lovett’s fiddle player Andrea Zonn, Rodriguez recalled, “I wanted to do what she was doing.” Transferring to Boston’s Berklee College of Music, she found the resources to transform the violin into a fiddle.
The change in musical environment not only influenced Rodriguez’s fiddle playing, but also served as the perfect setting for collaborative duets, including a significant turn with singer/songwriter Chip Taylor. Their professional relationship led to Rodriguez’s debut album “Seven Angels on a Bicycle” which earned high marks from The Associated Press with raves for her as a “singular talent.”
Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams, who sang backup on the album’s recording “Mask of Moses,” praised Rodriguez’s performance to the New York Times. “She’s got something unique in her voice that’s very subtle and a little smoky and sweet. I detect a certain wisdom in her, and yet a sense of wonder, as well.”
Today, the Brooklyn-based Rodriguez is busy touring following the release of her album “She Ain’t Me” which climbed to #2 at Americana Radio. She was honored by The Roots Music Association with a 2008 “Songwriter of the Year” award in the folk category. Rodriguez is featured on the new Tish Hinojosa album “Uncommonly Diverse,” and her song “Rag Doll” was featured on an episode of CBS television show Ghost Whisperer.
Although Rodriguez resists labels—there have been comparisons with Sarah McLaughlin or Nora Jones—what is universally true of her music is its depth and power. “On her latest CD, ‘She Ain’t Me,’ Carrie Rodriguez crates lush dramatic sound-scapes full of cosmic rhythms, ethereal melodies, and plenty of twang both in her voice and in the banjos and riffles, to keep the music grounded. I’m reminded of some of Roseanne Cash’s work, of Emmy Lou Harris’ work, but what stands out in Carrie Rodriguez’s music is a feminine, sexy voice that commands attention.” TapRootRadio.com.

The Door Community Auditorium is pleased and excited to present its 19th season’s summer/fall schedule. “Each year we strive to enrich and entertain through a wide variety of performance opportunities, and this year is no exception,” said Patti Podgers, DCA public relations manager. “Our program director Pete Evans has done a fabulous job of selecting performances for every musical taste and every age.
“It’s a great line-up, everything from comedy to country, stirring marches and the joy of children’s singing; everyone is going to enjoy our shows this season. It’s going to be a powerful season of entertainment.”

“Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow”
Featuring Wisconsin Author Michael Perry

Humorist and bestselling author Michael Perry is as ordinary as the day is long. He more times than not arrives at his guest lectures and readings in a pair of well-worn jeans, a scuffed pair of boots on his feet. But it is that very ordinariness that makes Perry exceptional. With an eye for the mundane and an ear for a good tale--tall or otherwise--the author of three books and countless essays and articles has won the hearts of fans across the United States with stories of everyday life.

On April 17, 2009, Perry will appear at the Door Community Auditorium. Reading from his books and sharing stories of growing up in a small town in western Wisconsin, the author will relate the joys and sorrows of living in close proximity to his neighbors, family, and friends. And though Perry professes a lack of sentimentality, his books and essays are delicate vignettes, both tender and compassionate.

It is the universality of Perry’s stories that resonate with readers. Often greeted with “your town is just like our town,” Perry commented, “…they are focusing less on size and geography than some idea of contented centeredness or generalized familiarity. Put another way, it seems to be less about the number on the sign than the feel of a place.”

Due for release on Tuesday, April 21, Coop: A Year of Poultry, Pig and Parenting is Perry’s newest book. Picking up where his 2007 publication Truck: A Love Story left off, Perry chronicles his adventures as a husband, father, and sometime farmer. Confronted by his young daughter’s questions about faith, a butt-biting pig, and the loss of a dear friend, Perry is thoughtful, tender, and humorous.

All of Perry’s books will be available for purchase the night of the presentation; Coop will be available for pre-order the night of the presentation. The author will be signing his books immediately following the talk.
