CINNAMON WINDMILL IN EGG HARBOR SUPPORTS DOOR COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY THROUGH
SALES OF SHELTER MERCHANDISE.

The weekends of December 11-13 and 18-20, Cinnamon Windmill, located in the
Main Street Shops in downtown Egg Harbor will be supporting the Door County
Humane Society through sales of DCHS's leftover 2009 merchandise.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of this merchandise, which includes DCHS
merchandise apparel, hats, balls, leashes and mousepads goes right back to
the shelter.

"I do it for the animals, plain and simple," said Jan Luser, Owner of
Cinnamon Windmill. "Business owners don't always have the time for hands on
volunteer work. This is just one small way that I could help this very
worthy organization."

Carrie Counihan, Director of the Door County Humane Society, is excited to
see the event come back again this year. "The shelter staff is so fortunate
to have the backing of the Door County business community. There are so
many fundraisers, such as this one at Cinnamon Windmill, that help offset
our operating costs and give year round exposure to our shelter. We are
very grateful for their support."

Cinnamon Windmill is located in the Main Street Shops in downtown Egg
Harbor. Jan Luser has operated her shop, which carries a variety of fun and
inspirational gifts, for the past 18 years. Winter hours are Friday,
Saturday & Sunday from 10am-4pm. For more information call

WILKINS & OLANDER HOSTS JEWELRY DESIGNER PATRICIA LOCKE APPEARANCE

On Saturday, October 3rd, from 2pm - 4pm, Wilkins & Olander will host a meet and greet for Chicago-based jewelry designer Patricia Locke. The event will take place at Wilkins & Olander’s Third Avenue location in Sturgeon Bay.

Among America’s premier contemporary jewelry designers, Patricia Locke speaks a distinctive visual language. Locke’s think-for-yourself, statement jewelry blends the depth of fine art with the sensation of fashion at its most provocative. Textural and multi-faceted, her designs reflect the complexity of modern femininity, the confidence and self-possession of a powerful persona.

While Locke’s evocative adornments take inspiration from a wealth of cultural and historic influences – including her own travels, ancient coins, hieroglyphics, architecture, religious totems, and astronomy – she says, “Ultimately, I’m more interested in the future than the past.” Hallmarks of her work include her inspired asymmetry; tantalizing multi-metal combinations; and use of positive-negative space. A master of paradox, Locke’s jewelry is at once handsome and beautiful, organic and geometric, contemporary with heirloom overtones.

Each Patricia Locke collection of earrings, pins, bracelets and necklaces exudes its own personality, with the designer’s creative counterpoint playing around a given theme. Says Patricia, “Creativity is play for me.” Defining characteristics emerge within her jewelry designs, such as mosaics synthesizing influences as diverse as the Arts & Crafts movement and computer technology; architectural principles informing a streamlined space odyssey of “future deco”; or complex, curvaceous forms manifest a lyrical, organic femininity. Regardless of the season, all of Locke’s jewelry has one thing in common: each unique piece stands alone, encouraging individual interpretation.

Self-taught, Patricia Locke had never worked with her hands or taken an art class prior to undertaking what would become her life’s work in jewelry design. She designed her first pieces, fine jewelry in sterling silver and gold in 1971, working largely by private commission for several years. By 1979, the desire to reach a wider audience prompted Locke’s first designer costume jewelry collection, which she personally – and quickly – sold one-on-one to prominent galleries and retailers. Locke’s jewelry is now handcrafted by a team of 25 artisans outside of Chicago, Illinois.

Carol Overland, owner of Wilkins & Olander adds, “Patricia Locke is one of the most popular jewelry lines at Wilkins & Olander – so popular that we’ve carried it for over 17 years! We’re so fortunate to have Patricia come visit us here in Sturgeon Bay. She doesn’t do many public appearances and I’m sure her fans in Door County will jump at the chance to meet her in person.

Since 1990, Wilkins & Olander has been a purveyor of distinctive updated traditional sportswear, shoes and accessories for women. Visit the boutique’s Sturgeon Bay location at 120 N. Third Avenue or in Fish Creek’s Founders Square on Main Street. For hours and inquiries, please contact the Sturgeon Bay shop at 920-868-3168, or the Fish Creek shop at 920-743-3137. Busy Busy Day - Lots of Places Visited, including Hands-On Art Studio!

We started off with breakfast at The White Gull Inn, in Fish Creek, then visited with many places throughout the county. With stops at By The Bay Motel, Homestead Suites, Hilltop Inn, Parkwood Lodge, Main Street Motel (watch video!), On Deck, Santa Fe Shop, Gibraltar Grill, Nor Door Sport & Cyclery, Juniper Inn, Thorp House Inn, and HideSide Corner Store all in Fish Creek too. We like to continue to visit these places to get updates, get a fresh perspective, and speak with the owners.

We headed north to Ephraim, stopping at Bay Breeze Resort and Harbor View Resort. On the way back south, we visited with Hands-On Art Studio (see picture) and visited with Cy, the owner. He is doing so many cool things in the shop, and YOU TOO can create your own art here, in the painting studio, or glass studio or even the metal studio. This place is so popular with people of all ages - from kids to older folks - because it is fun and geared toward any artistic level. We love it and highly recommend that you make Hands-On Art Studio part of your next Door County vacation.

We had a late lunch at the new Wild Tomato in Fish Creek, and then headed south again.

We had great visits with all these folks, and that's good for us keeping up with what they are doing, and the quality of their places. More later - dinner calls in a little while!

Country Walk Shops in Sister Bay Adds 4 Shops

We just received this announcement from the Country Walk Shops in Sister Bay.

___________

PRESS RELEASE

COUNTRY WALK SHOPS ANNOUNCES 4 NEW MERCHANTS

April 23, 2009

For the upcoming 2009 season, we are proud to announce the addition of 4 new merchants to THE COUNTRY WALK SHOPS in Sister Bay.

Whether you enjoy food, fragrances or hobbies, Country Walk has something fresh and interesting to offer our patrons. Three new retailers will open their doors in our attractive Garden Level, and one will welcome visitors on our Upper Level across from Piggly Wiggly. The new merchants joining us this year include:

Affordable Satellite TV, Internet & Security provides local service and support for the residents and businesses of Door County.

Cheesecake, Etc. - Indulge yourself with cheesecakes and other delectables made from scratch with all natural ingredients.

Chou Chou is a fragrance blending bar and boutique, bringing this unique retail concept to Door County residents and visitors.

Harbor Tea and Spice Company - Relocating from Egg Harbor. Enjoy a freshly brewed hot or iced tea while you shop over 200 varieties of fine teas, herbs, spices and extracts.

“We are excited about the momentum that’s building here at Country Walk Shops,” said Kathy Toerpe of Door County Scrapbooking, a member of the Country Walk Board of Directors. “In the past five years, eight merchants have opened new locations here, bringing a great level of energy and innovation.”

Doug Schwartz, co-owner with his wife and daughter of The Cook Book and Board President, agreed. “Since we moved here from our previous location three years ago, we have seen our business grow. Even in a difficult economy, people want to be active doing the things they enjoy, whether it’s cooking, reading books, or quilting.”

The new retailers are looking forward to success in their new ventures. “We are excited to join the growing Country Walk Shops in the Sister Bay community,” said Scott & Belkis Dell, owners of Cheescake, Etc. “In our efforts to open a new business, all have been very welcoming. As we look to establish another successful business, we anticipate becoming more involved in helping increase the attractiveness of Door County as a vacation destination.” The Dells join more than 25 other businesses in Country Walk, some of whom have operated continuously here for more than 2 decades.

Country Walk Shops is home to over 30 businesses, including food and dining; fashion, beauty and hair care; hobbies and specialty gifts; and professional services. Strategically located next to Piggly Wiggly at the intersection of Highways 42 and 57 in Sister Bay, Country Walk boasts ample parking and an attractive garden setting, within walking distance of Pamida and downtown Sister Bay.

Here and there
So many great gift ideas here on the Door Peninsula, and a lot of places have wonderful sales. Over the past years, I have given family members and professionals I work with flavored oils from Curt’s Oilerie, Fish Creek, and cheese assortments from Renard’s, Sturgeon Bay. I had fun at the sales this fall and early winter. City Farmer, Ephraim, continues its 50 percent off sale, and Nicole’s in Main Street Shops, Egg Harbor, had fun arty clothing for sale. Country Lady, Liberty Square, Egg Harbor, has many winter coats for sale. Also, Junction Center, a yoga studio and shop, Egg Harbor, had 25 percent off yoga clothes and props. Bath Essentials, Fish Creek, is always a great place to go this time of year. The skin care products there are so important during the winter, and there are many markdowns there too. So, not enough snow yet for cross country skiing, but the shopping is plentiful, to be sure. See you here and there on the Door Peninsula, Donna Marie Pocius, freelance writer.
