(August 22, 2013 – Fish Creek) – There will be live music in the The Cookery’s wine bar Labor Day weekend on both Saturday and Sunday nights. David Hatch & Lynn Gudmundsen will be performing at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 30^st. David and Lynn will play everything from Beatles to Beethoven, acoustic classic rock and bluegrass, with a tad of country and folk. On Sunday, August 31^st at 8 pm, progressive folk singer/songwriter, mother/daughter duo, Small Forest Girls, will be playing some fabulous harmonies.

(April 25, 2014 – Fish Creek) – The Cookery is kicking off its’ music season with Jess Holland and Nick Hoover on Saturday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m. Nick and Jess are local favorites and will play a mix of happy, sad and twangy music.

Hit Music Revue “Buckets of Rain” at
Door Community Auditorium

On June 15, six of Door County’s favorite musicians will come to Door Community Auditorium for a revival of their hit musical revue Buckets of Rain: The Songs of Bob Dylan. After selling out multiple performances at Woodwalk Gallery last fall, Memphis multi-instrumentalists Eric Lewis and Tommy Burroughs, local folk crooners Katie Dahl and Jeanne Kuhns, and bassist-percussionists Rich Higdon and Patrick Palmer will reunite in this one-night-only tribute to one of America’s most iconic songwriters.

Combining their considerable vocal talent and prodigious instrumental skills, the Buckets of Rain crew breathes new life into some of Dylan’s best-known songs. The troupe’s arrangements recall the power of such Dylan songs as “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and make classic tunes like “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “I Shall Be Released” spark and crackle. Each Buckets of Rain performer has chosen a selection of their favorite Dylan tunes to perform throughout the evening, backing each other up with fine vocals, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric guitar, dobro, harmonica, bass, and percussion.

Bob Dylan (who turned seventy years old last year) is arguably one of America’s most groundbreaking songwriters, influencing countless musicians and writing dozens of hits in his long tenure on the music scene. His songs range from straight-ahead folk to classic rock-and-roll, from modern jazz to traditional blues. The depth and breadth of Dylan’s songwriting make him an ideal subject for the wide-ranging talents of the Buckets of Rain cast.

Memphis multi-instrumentalists Tommy Burroughs and Eric Lewis are well-known on the Door County music scene for their astounding musical wizardry on a multitude of stringed instruments. Both have won the Premier Player Award for Strings by the Memphis Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Lewis has worked locally with American Folklore Theatre and a plethora of Door County musicians, and has also toured nationally with the first nationwide tour of Patsy! and Prairie Home Companion favorites Robin and Linda Williams. Burroughs is an accomplished songwriter who has toured and played with a host of internationally known musicians, as well as local bands like the Nicks and the Hagen Family.

Katie Dahl is a Door County resident and national touring artist who is known locally for her work with American Folklore Theatre and Door Shakespeare, as well as for her solo shows. Her rich alto voice and lively performances have earned her many accolades, including 2010 Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of the Year. Jeanne Kuhns is a singer-songwriter who weaves themes of blues and jazz into her own unique blend of progressive folk. Kuhns is possessed of a versatile voice that is at once powerful and intimate. In 2008, she was voted “Best Female Musician” in Door County Magazine.

Rich Higdon is a bassist and percussionist who regularly performs with a variety of Door County artists, including Katie Dahl, Lynn Gudmundsen, and Chris Irwin. Higdon is also a well-known Door County potter. Patrick Palmer, a member of the band Lost Mothra and owner of Novel Ideas bookstore, accompanies musicians across the peninsula with his skills on both electric and upright bass.

Damsel Fly Playing at The Cookery

(July 1, 2011 – Fish Creek) - Damsel Fly will be playing in The Cookery’s wine bar on Monday, July 11 at 8 p.m. Damsel Fly is an amazingly talented, all-female, teenage folk quartet from Decorah, IA.

The group’s lethal combo of youth & sheer talent is less perplexing when one considers that they are the daughters of a few of Decorah’s progressive and musically-oriented families. The band consists of Kasi Misseldine on mandolin, Rose Reed-Maxfield on cello and bass, Ingrid Rotto on guitar, and Ida Rotto on banjo. The girls performed their first concert when they were ten years old.

Damsel Fly largely performs music written by others, their selections always in good taste and their arrangements are incredibly unique. Many of their covers are of traditional folk songs or familiar classics from acts like the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, The Wailin’ Jennies, and James Taylor.

Honey Dewdrops to Perform at Last White Gull Concert of the Season

The Honey Dewdrops, an award winning, nationally touring husband and wife folk duet, will be featured Wednesday, April 6, at the White Gull Inn. Tickets for the 8 PM concert, the seventh and final concert of the season at the Fish Creek inn, are $15. The Dewdrops, Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish, perform original songs focusing on vocal harmonies and tight instrumentation. Influenced by traditional Appalachian music as well as contemporary singer-songwriters, the Dewdrops blend old styles with new and accompanying themselves on guitar, banjo and mandolin.

If the Sun Will Shine, their debut record, was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and was #2 for two consecutive months on Folk DJ Radio in 2010. The album is a collection of songs written over the past two years, capturing “something haunting, melancholic and all-together charming, according to Jeff Royer of Fly Magazine. Their second album, These Old Roots, is also a tribute to the way music was recorded before overdubs and tracking. It was the #1 rated album on the Folk DJ Charts for October and November 2010. The Dewdrops gained national recognition with award winning performances of NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion in 2008 and were finalists in Mountain Stage’s New Song Contest in 2009.

Waymores to Perform at White Gull Inn

The trio known as The Waymores, featuring three singer-songwriters whose works have collectively been recorded by some of the biggest names in Nashville will appear in concert Wednesday, March 2, at the White Gull Inn, Fish Creek. Tickets for the 8 PM concert, the sixth in a series of seven at the Fish Creek inn this winter, are $15.

Songwriters Don Henry, Sally Barris and Tom Kimmel all have established single careers, but when they tour together as the Waymores, their concerts have been described as Alt-Nashville Writers-in-the-round, in which they pass the mike, performing their own songs with accompaniment from each other.

Grammy Award winner Don Henry's songs have been recorded by Ray Charles, Patti Page, Conway Twitty, Kathy Mattea and dozens of other artists. Henry is a veteran of 28 years in the music business as a writer, publisher, producer and performer. He has shared the stage with Joey Ramone, Al Gore, Pete Seeger, Steve Earle, Ray Price, Livingston Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Webb, Guy Clark, David Crosby, John Prine, Keith Urban, Shawn Colvin, Dan Seals, Michael Johnson, Janis Ian, Nanci Griffith, and Jim Messina among others.

Henry’s songs include "B.F.D." , the biker lullaby "Harley", the Martin Luther King tribute "Beautiful Fool", and the Grammy Award winning "Where've You Been". In addition to a Grammy, Kathy Mattea's version of "Where've You Been" won Henry (and co-writer Jon Vezner) song of the year honors from ACM (Academy of Country Music), CMA (Country Music Association) and NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International). "Where've You Been" was the first song to be awarded all four honors in the same year.

Sally Barris, has managed to be successful in the mainstream world of country music without giving up her folk & Celtic roots. Her unique style is influenced by artists such as Tony Rice, Dougie Maclean, Triona Ni Dhomhnaill & Richard Thompson. Whether in her own performances or those of artists such as Lee Ann Womack or American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler, Barris’s music is unmistakably distinctive. In addition to touring with the Waymores, Barris is currently on tour with her third CD, Restless Soul. Writing in Maverick Magazine, Reviewer Alan Cacket called Barris a “songwriter poised to make the breakthrough to international recognition as a major recording artist like Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mindy Smith and Allison Moorer…Sally Barris doesn't easily fit into the country genre, but is one of the most talented writers currently working in Nashville."

Whether on her own recordings or those of hit artists like Martina McBride or Lee Ann Womack, Barris’s songs are widely recognized. And while her songs have been covered by Trisha Yearwood and Keith Urban, John Michael Montgomery, Kathy Mattea and many others, she has a wide base of fans and peers who are attracted by her high mountain soprano on her own recordings.

Tom Kimmel's business card reads Overnight Success, but the truth is far from it. After graduating college, he worked as a short order cook, bus boy, taxi driver, chef, shipping clerk, lab technician, janitor, waiter, bartender and window washer before establishing himself as an award winning songwriter for Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Randy Travis and a host of others. Since 1980, when his songs were recorded by Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman (of Byrds fame) and Levon Helm (of The Band), dozens of his compositions have been covered by a host of major artists including Shawn Colvin, Waylon Jennings, the Stray Cats, and the Spinners.

Once an eclectic rock and roller, Kimmel found his voice as a singer-songwriter while opening Nanci Griffith’s 1991-92 world tour. A New Folk winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival in ’93, he began performing as a solo act, stressing an acoustic-centered approach to his music and bringing what one critic called “a poignant and humorous spirit to his poetry and storytelling”.

Kimmel’s peers have joined critics in commending the Alabama native's unadorned stylings as uniquely soulful. Irish songstress Maura O’Connell, who has recorded haunting versions of Kimmel’s The Blue Train and Poetic Justice, says, "Tom is an incredible songwriter... And he seems to be getting better as the years go on."

Featured in motion pictures such as Runaway Bride, Serendipity, and Twins, and in television shows as varied as Captain Kangaroo, Miami Vice and Touched by An Angel, recordings of Kimmel’s compositions have sold millions of copies around the world, achieving gold and platinum sales in many countries.

Cookery Hosting Fall Music Series

(August 23, 2010 – Fish Creek) - The Cookery’s Wine Bar will be hosting a fall music series during the months of September and October on Thursday nights.

The series will kick off with Katie Dahl on September 2. The music series will continue in September with David Hatch & Lynn Gudmundsen on September 9, The Nicks on September 16, Jeanne Kuhns & Lost Mothra on September 23, and melaniejane on September 30. The October schedule will be released at a later date.

The music will start at 8 p.m. in the wine bar. The wine bar’s small plate, appetizer and dessert menu will be available before and during the show. There is no cover charge.

Birch Creek receives Arts Board grant

Birch Creek Music Performance Center, Egg Harbor, is pleased to announce that it has received a grant of $26,825 from the Wisconsin Arts Board. This grant, awarded through the Creation & Presentation Program, supports Birch Creek’s mission of providing intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians.

The ongoing commitment from the State of Wisconsin to fund the arts in local communities is vital. Birch Creek will serve more than 11,000 people in Door County with performances and educational programs in 2010.

Additionally, local school students in all five Door County public schools have benefited from Birch Creek’s annual “Artists in the Schools” outreach program, which has served more than 3,000 students since its inception in 2001-2002. “Artists in the Schools” engages youth in learning a wide variety of music from our professional faculty members, and in the ethnic and social lessons that surround each genre’s history.

Birch Creek’s evening concerts and daytime outreach concerts, made possible by Arts Board funding, allow the Egg Harbor school to bring nationally-known musicians to Door County such as Robert Hanford, Concertmaster of the Lyric Opera Orchestra, Chicago; as well as honored Wisconsin artists, like Vicki Peterson Jenks, Percussion Program Ensemble Director with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, Madison.

The grant programs through the Arts Board were retooled in 2008 so that meaningful funding could be provided to the greatest number of Wisconsin communities, including communities with rural populations like Door County. The State of Wisconsin recognizes that all communities, regardless of their populations, bring enjoyment and value to Wisconsin citizens.

Birch Creek has been a Door County education and entertainment center for 35 years.

Wisconsin Arts Board grants are awarded on a matching basis. Organizations that receive Arts Board funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. The Wisconsin Arts Board is the state agency that nurtures creativity, cultivates expression, promotes the arts, supports the arts in education, stimulates community and economic development, and serves as a resource for people of every culture and heritage in Wisconsin’s communities.

Brandi Carlile to Grace DCA stage on Aug 22

Contemporary folk-rock singer Brandi Carlile will grace the Door Community Auditorium stage with her dynamic presence on Sunday, August 22.

Since her major-label debut in 2005, Brandi Carlile’s career has exploded on the folk-rock scene. Fans adore her throaty, passionate voice and her charming, relatable songwriting style. The twenty-nine year old from Ravensdale, WA, has collaborated with several notable musicians, among them Sir Elton John, who says of Carlile, “Brandi has an amazing voice. She’s a great songwriter and has a tremendous career ahead of her.” Sheryl Crow also commented on Carlile’s talent. “She has the most amazing voice I may have ever heard. Soulful. Country. Perfect in every way – and propelled by taste.”

Carlile has released three albums to date, Brandi Carlile (2005), The Story (2007), and Give Up The Ghost (2009), all of which have been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and critics alike.
Carlile’s voice is truly unique, standing out from all of the other female voices on the music scene today. Her tone has been compared to a mix of music industry greats Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin. A performance by Carlile is one that will leave her audience with chills and warm hearts all at the same time.

Tickets for this performance are selling quickly, as our Gold Circle seating is already sold out. Carlile’s performance set for August 21 at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield, WI, has completely sold out as well. Terry Meyer-Matier, Executive Director of Big Top Chautauqua, is thrilled to have Brandi Carlile back this year. Meyer-Matier spoke of their providence in acquiring Carlile, “We had hired The Indigo Girls for a performance last year. We didn't know that they were planning on bringing their own opening act, so a couple months out they called and said the opener was Brandi Carlile! We were thrilled, because she was also on our wish list. Many people at the performance hadn't heard of Brandi yet, but she was all the buzz after her performance. So we definitely had to bring her back.”

Festival Continues its Tradition of Bringing Carnegie Hall Performances to Door County

Sister Bay, WI – Door County’s Midsummer’s Music Festival has much in store for classical music lovers this September. Wisconsin’s premier chamber music ensemble will end its 20th anniversary season with special concerts designed to celebrate historical connections to Door County and also a celebratory series that will feature some of the most inspiring performances over the festival’s 20 year history. The concerts run September 1 – 6 and take place in various towns and locations around Door County. Each concert venue is unique and full of history and charm.

World-class musicians from organizations such as the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Pro Arte Quartet, Aspen Music Festival, and artist faculty from major universities, make up Wisconsin’s premiere chamber music ensemble — Midsummer’s Music Festival. The festival has had a long history of bringing Carnegie Hall quality performances to Door County. While the Midsummer’s Music Festival began 20 years ago, the Labor Day series was started in 2002 when violist Walter Preucil and pianist William Koehler were scheduled for a concert in New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall that October. Festival founders Jim and Jean Berkenstock invited them to do a preview in Door County. The concerts were very successful and became a permanent part of the festival. The Carnegie Hall tradition continues as members of the festival ensemble just performed at Carnegie Hall in May of 2010.

The Labor Day series consists of two programs – each offered three different times at three different venues. The first program is called “Historic Connections”. This program will include works by Edward Collins, Edvard Grieg and Franz Josef Haydn. The first connection revolves around the first piece by Edward Collins, a composer born in Joliet, educated in Europe, lived in Chicago, and had close ties to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Collins also had a summer place in Door County and did much of his composing there during a certain period of his life. He died in 1951. The other connection is around the piece by Edvard Grieg. Grieg is Norway’s most famous composer, a fitting tie-in to the Scandinavian population of Door County.

The second program is a celebration of 20 years of magnificent performances. Festival organizers chose works from the most splendid performances over the years. All three pieces were played to great accolades. "Cafe Music" by Paul Schoenfield is an outrageously infectious work that incorporates the best of jazz, blues, country, pop, etc., in a three-movement celebration. The Concerto by Liebermann is a single movement work that features violinist Isabella Lippi and pianist William Koehler with string quartet in another sparkling virtuoso work.

The final piece, the Robert Schumann Piano Quintet, is one of the very best pieces of chamber music ever written, coming from 1841, just after his marriage to Clara Wieck which finally came to pass after 12 years of opposition from her father. Schumann burst forth with a torrid celebration of compositional activity (including this Quintet) that is among the most intense in the history of music.

Most tickets are $25. The “MIDSUMMER’S MUSIC, HELP OF DOOR COUNTY and THE RIDGES CELEBRATION” is priced at $85 and includes dinner. Wisconsin Public Radio host Anders Yocom will emcee the event.
