Last year’s runner-up, Monica Lenius, from Southern Door, is the sole returnee from last year’s group. Monica’s original style features passionate lyrics and piano self-accompaniment. Another vocal and piano composer is Gretchen Hathaway from Sturgeon Bay High School. Gretchen performed at the Steel Bridge Songfest last summer. She performs around the community with fellow competitor Rachael Wilson. Rachael is a senior at Sevastopol High School, and an avid cross-country running competitor. The girls can be heard singing at local Sturgeon Bay coffee shops as well as school and church productions.
Sturgeon Bay Sophomore Lauryn Davison is the youngest of the group at 15. Upon being asked if she would prefer to wait until next year to perform, Lauryn replied, “I’m ready now!” Rounding out the group this year are Gibraltar juniors Whitney House and Lilli Nelson. House accompanies herself on guitar and enjoys performing in church, school choir and plays. Nelson speaks four languages fluently, but for the Idol show, will sing in English!
The Door County Idol show is based on the popular American Idol, but rather than an elimination series, crowns its winner in just one night. Audience participation is crucial, as each audience member will have the opportunity to vote. Three judges will critique the performances as they occur and will also vote, with weighted votes, at the end of the performances. Performers are sometimes accompanied by Ben Larsen on guitar, with a backup CD, a pianist, or self-accompaniment on piano or guitar.
Nick Freimuth, DoorCounty DailyNews.com broadcaster, and his wife Karyn, will serve as co-hosts of the event. Friemuth is an accomplished singer himself and hosts a special radio program weekly dedicated to the arts.
Judges for Door County Idol traditionally change each year and represent various aspects of the local entertainment and business community. Christie Webber is a co-founder of The SteelBridge Songfest, along with her brother, recording artist Pat mAcdonald. Christie will be “scouting” for next summer’s event, along with her judging duties. David Eliot is the co-owner, publisher and production manager of the Peninsula Pulse newspaper. He also serves on the board at the Door Community Auditorium. Alan Kopischke is the development director at the Peninsula Players.
Last year’s show featured the previous four “Idol” winners, and a surprise performance from Eli Mattson, runner-up of “America’s Got Talent, 2008”. “The bar was certainly raised last year,” comments Kristy Nelson, producer of Door County Idol. “But this year we had our largest response to auditions and responded by having eight incredibly talented Door County youths make the cut.”
Assisting Nelson is co-producer, Holly Feldman and student interns, Sophie Nelson and Tanner Lundquist. Feldman holds a degree in Arts Management and Theatre and serves as the Isadoora Theatre president. She works extensively with the contestants to help them with song choices, stage comfort, movement and trying new styles of music. Sophie Nelson has watched the show each year and now will get the opportunity to see how it all goes together. Lundquist interned last year, and served also as the opening entertainment pianist. This year, he will assist in production details.
Tickets for the Door County Idol Show are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students, 18 and under. All tickets are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2828), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

6th Door County Idol Competition at DCA
Eight Contestants from Washington Island to Southern Door
Eight Door County teens will compete for the title of the 2010 Door County Idol at the Door Community Auditorium on Saturday, February 6 at 7 p.m. For the first time in Door County Idol history, due to an overwhelming number of audition participants, this year’s group has grown from the standard six to a group of eight, and includes two competitors from Washington Island.
The eight finalists, selected from over 30 teens that auditioned, represent all of Door County’s high schools. The Door Community Auditorium hosts the event, which is additionally supported by Cynthia Stiehl, The Fish Creek Civic Association, On Deck Clothing Company, Novel Ideas Book Store and The Bistro at Liberty Square.
Each contestant will perform two songs of their choice. Two young men represent Washington Island this year. Conrad McDonald is a talented musician, accompanying himself often on guitar or piano. Also from Washington Island is Ainslie Cornell, whose deep voice is reminiscent of one of his favorite musicians, Johnny Cash..
Last year’s runner-up, Monica Lenius, from Southern Door, is the sole returnee from last year’s group. Monica’s original style features passionate lyrics and piano self-accompaniment. Accomplished Singer/Musician/Songwriter, Katie Dahl,
Stars at DCA Fireside Coffeehouse Concert, Saturday, Jan. 30
When Katie Dahl picked up a guitar for the first time, it was the music of Cheryl Wheeler, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams—all of her favorites—that she choose to play. Today, the accomplished singer/musician/songwriter no longer needs to perform other artists’ music. She brings her music and her unique style to the Door Community Auditorium Fireside Coffeehouse on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 pm. Tickets are $14.
Last July, Katie celebrated the release of her debut record, County Line, which she has described as “a folk-infused exploration of love and the American landscape.” The album contains two cover songs--"Gibraltar Town," by Katie’s songwriting hero, Fred Alley, and "Paradise," by John Prine--and eight Dahl originals, including "America" (a conflicted love song to the titular nation), "Katharine Hepburn Waltz" (a whimsical look at the difficulties of falling in love), "Southern Star" (a Shakespeare-infused journey into the mind of John Wilkes Booth), and "Freedom Song" (a 1960s-style belt-it-out singalong). These songs epitomize the thoughtful, literate lyricism and straightforward melodic sense that characterizes all of Katie’s songwriting.
Katie was 19 years old when she slipped on the ice at her southern Minnesota alma mater, Carleton College, and broke her wrist. Forced to take a two-month break from playing the oboe, Katie decided to use her newfound free time to learn guitar, strumming the strings with her stiff right hand and teaching herself chord positions with the other. She started out playing covers of songs by the songwriters she’s always loved and gradually gathered the courage to begin writing songs of her own.
Since then, this honey-voiced musician has turned her musical attention entirely to the acoustic folk music she’s always loved, singing everywhere from the cliff country of Mali, West Africa, to a canal boat in southern France, to an outdoor theater nestled in the pines of northern Wisconsin. Katie currently makes her home in northern Door County, and is fast making a name for herself with her rich alto voice, honest vocals, intricate fingerpicking, and incisive lyricism.
One reviewer enthused, “In a rich alto voice, Dahl brilliantly paints to life vivid scenes of cherry orchards, wide-open deserts and early-morning cities, as well as characters of depth, introspection and purpose.
“The title track of County Line is an infectious story about leaving home and the ache to return. Later in the album, this theme is beautifully mirrored by John Prine's "Paradise." With a nod to Pete Seeger, "Freedom Song" evokes the most classic melodies of Americana.
“Dahl's skill for combining both outstanding lyrics with sweet melodies is a rare one. These qualities are amplified by the caliber and sensitivities of the musicians who accompany her. Since I opened Robin Jay Music four years ago, I have never heard as many people harmonizing and humming along with any other recording as much as this one.”
Tickets for the Katie Dahl Fireside Coffeehouse concert are $14 and may be purchased on line at www.dcauditorium.org, by phone at 868-2728, or at the Auditorium box office Monday and Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and the day of the concert from 11 am to 3 pm

The Big Read Door County 2010: Willa Cather’s “My Ántonia”
Peninsula Players and Door County Library present
month-long series of events to begin January 11
January 15, 2010—Fish Creek, WI— The Big Read Door County, now in its third year, has quickly become a cherished Door County tradition. Anticipation of this year’s celebration and exploration of Willa Cather’s remarkable “My Ántonia” is so great that all of the 650 free books provided by the Friends of Door County Libraries have already been taken by eager readers. The library still has many copies to loan.
This year’s events, once again brought to the community by Peninsula Players in partnership with Door County Library, will start with a kickoff at Door Community Auditorium on January 11 at 6:30 p.m. Highlights of the kickoff will include Miss Door County Katie Sawyer speaking on literacy, Dr. Estella Lauter discussing several compelling themes and unique aspects of the book, an opportunity to learn an authentic American Folk Dance presented by Door County Folk Alliance, the unveiling of a commissioned artwork depicting Willa Cather and Big Read Producer Alan Kopischke previewing events.
Other featured events include a keynote speech on “Landscape as Home Place” by Professor Susan Maher, vice president of the Willa Cather Foundation, sponsored by Door County Land Trust and held at Crossroads at Big Creek; a special Peninsula Music Festival concert at Shepherd of the Bay featuring Dvořák and other Bohemian composers; Miller Art Museum’s “Barbara’s Farm” exhibit, featuring Daniel Anderson photos of rural farm life; a Peninsula Players staged reading of “My Ántonia” at Birch Creek’s Juniper Hall; two American Folk dances, film screenings at Third Avenue Playhouse and at library branches, classes at the Clearing, book discussions, school programs, family events and much more.
“Cather’s depiction of the immigrant experience, her loving remembrances of friendships and the land and her creation of the vibrant Ántonia make for a thoroughly enjoyable read and provide us tremendously rich material to explore from different angles in venues throughout the county,” said Big Read producer Alan Kopischke, Peninsula Players development director. “Part of what makes Door County’s Big Read unique is the infusion of arts throughout our events and the incredible array of enthusiastically collaborating organizations – more than 30 of them this year.”
Funding for The Big Read is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Friends of Door County Libraries and Door County Community Foundation’s Arts Fund. The NEA also provides reader’s guides and audio guides, available at each Door County Library branch, as well as providing teacher’s guides to each Door County school district.
Previous Big Reads focused on John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” and Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” drawing a total of 4,000 participants to the many events in the winters of 2008 and 2009.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. For more information about The Big Read visit www.neabigread.org. Event listings can be found there or at www.peninsulaplayers.com.
“We’re very excited to have received yet another NEA grant to continue our year-round connection to the community as we lead into our historic 75th anniversary season,” said Players Artistic Director Greg Vinkler. Peninsula Players, founded in 1935, is America’s oldest professional resident summer theater and the oldest professional theater in Wisconsin. The Players will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its first performance on July 25, 2010.
Peninsula Players is America’s oldest professional resident summer theater and is unique in the country for its diverse productions, continuing loyalty to a resident company, and its beautiful setting of 16 wooded acres along the cedar-lined shores of Green Bay.
In the past 73 years, the theater has become a Door County landmark and its cornerstone arts institution, attracting audience members from throughout Wisconsin and across the country.

Isadoora Theatre Company - "The Dinner Party"
Cast selected for February production! See Press Release below.
_________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Holly Feldman, 920-493-3667
Isadoora Announces Cast for “The Dinner Party”
Isadoora Theatre Company (Door County, WI) is pleased to announce the cast for their February production of Neil Simon’s “The Dinner Party.” The play, directed by Henry Timm, will show at the Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay on February 11-14 & 18-21.
“The Dinner Party” begins when a mysterious invitation brings six divorcees together for dinner at a swank Parisian restaurant. In this humorous yet profound examination of marriage, the group speculates wildly about their conspicuously absent host, the apparent secrecy regarding the invitation, and the party’s true purpose. The Dinner Party is perhaps Simon’s most personal play, as sharp and frequently painful truths lurk behind the laugh lines – truths that should be evident to anyone who has ever undergone marriage followed by divorce.
The cast features some faces very familiar on the TAP stage along with a couple of newcomers to Isadoora: Stuart Champeau as Claude, David Smrz as Albert, Dan Hitt as Andre, Lola DeVillers as Mariette, Clara Wendland as Yvonne, and Chris Milton as Gabrielle.
The director Henry Timm is backed by an experienced production team including Stage Manager Elizabeth Bobbe, Lighting & Sound Designer David Alley, Costume & Prop Designer Margaret Magle, Set Builder Steve Graf, and Assistant to the Director Kathleen Harris.
“The Dinner Party” will be performed at the Third Avenue Playhouse, 239 N. Third Ave in Sturgeon Bay, on February 11-14 & 18-21. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 PM with a matinee on each Sunday at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for students. You may purchase tickets for “The Dinner Party” by contacting Third Avenue Playhouse by phone at (920) 743-1760, at their box office (hours Mon-Fri 10:00 am to 3:00 pm), or at the Dancing Bear, 12 N Third Ave, Sturgeon Bay (open seven days a week).
The mission of Isadoora Theatre Company is to celebrate theatre through its basic elements of movement, music, story and thought. Isadoora Theatre provides theatrical experiences of intellectual integrity fulfilled by open self-examination and artistic risk for the educational and cultural enrichment of our community.
Isadoora is always looking for willing hands to help with any number of projects, including backstage help. Visit www.isadoora.com or email info@isadoora.com to learn how YOU can get involved!

“GIBBY” THE WHITEFISH RESCUES FISH CREEK’S WINTER FESTIVAL TENT IN THE SHALLOWS OF HORSESHOE ISLAND.
THE TENT IS BACK FOR 2010!
Fish Creek’s 23rd annual Winter Festival brings the tent back for 2010.
The weekend of fun activities, February 5th, 6th and 7th, will be held in a large, outdoor, heated tent in Clark Park on the shores of the Fish Creek harbor.
“In order to preserve Winter Festival as the premiere winter event in Door County, we felt it was critical that we return the tent to Clark Park,” said Bonnie Spielman and Bonnie Smith, Civic Association board members. “The tent represents a gathering place with a sense of community for locals and visitors alike. It provides a festive atmosphere, with a little warmth outdoors in February.”
The tent will open Saturday the 6th at 10 AM with games, prizes, music, raffles food and drinks. “We are pairing local businesses with Door County non-profit organizations to sponsor games and activities to raise money for the community. Join in such traditions as the bike toss, ice bowling, minnow races, football toss, toilet seat toss, snowshoe dancing and more.
Help celebrate winter by joining in the fun of Fish Creek’s zany hometown parade at 10:30 AM on Main Street (Hwy. 42) and meet “Gibby” the whitefish, our festival mascot and hero….remember, he found our tent!
The annual soup fundraiser at Peninsula School of Art begins Saturday at 11 AM. Buy a bowl made by a local art student and enjoy homemade soup. Proceeds will benefit Feed My People.
At 3 PM on Saturday, the Annual Chili Cook-off will once again take place in the tent, with a spirited competition by proud chili cooks. The individual chili will be judged with the winner taking home a $250 prize and the kudos of the best chili in Door County. Enjoy sampling the chili and judging the People’s Choice Award.
For the 6th year in a row, internationally and nationally renowned kite fliers, makers and designers will fill the skies over Fish Creek with kites of all shapes and sizes for Kites Over the Bay. Fish Creek Kite Company owners Toby Schlick and Val Murre-Schlick are coordinating the event sanctioned by the American Kite Fliers Association. “We’ll have kite designers and makers who make beautiful kites,” Schlick said. “Al Sparling, one of the most active giant kite fliers in the world will be joining us with his collection of giant kites including an 88 foot long octopus and a 90 foot trilobite.”
Join our party in the tent and on the bay on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 and help save us all from a case of the winter blues.
