Door Peninsula Winery Wins Gold!

We received word recently that Door Peninsula Winery of Carlsville has won Gold in a recent competition! Great winery - Read our Review! See below.

Sweet Cherry Gold Highlights Door County Cherry

Door Peninsula Winery recently competed in one of the oldest professional wine competitions, the International Eastern Wine Competition, now in its 33rd year. The 2009 event again topped over 2,200 entries from 16 countries and 34 states. Door Peninsula Winery is proud to bring home the gold for their Sweet Cherry Wine, one of the first and original wines produced by Door Peninsula and a true Door County product.

Fruit wines in the Midwest are strong in the competition that is held at the Finger Lakes region of New York. Even a bronze medal in the competition requires a unanimous panel vote from judges that are wine-knowledgeable professionals, media specialists and wine makers who represent major east coast markets from Miami to Toronto.

Door Peninsula Winery's Sweet Cherry tasted better than the sweet cherry of the other major producers of fruit wine in the nation, St. Julian Winery in Michigan (silver) and St. James Winery in Missouri (bronze).

Door Peninsula Winery also took home a silver for both their popular Blackberry wine and Sunset Splash, a fruit wine blend. Of the blended fruit wine category, the Sunset Splash, that retails for $8.99, tasted better than many $14-26 bottles, again showing that Door Peninsula Winery's wines are of quality and value.

Find wine descriptions for all of Door Peninsula's fruit, fruit-varietals blends, and premium grape wines at www.dcwine.com.

The Music of the 50s and 60s
Rocks the Door Community Auditorium
Saturday, September 12, at 7 pm!!

Ask anyone about the music of the 50s and 60s and it is inevitable that the names Buddy Holly, “Big Bopper” Jiles Richardson, and Ritchie Valens are among the first to receive mention. Unfortunately, all three of the rock and roll legends perished in a plane crash in early 1959. And forever after the tragic night would be recalled as “the night the music died.” But on Saturday, September 12 at 7 pm the music will be alive and rocking at the Door Community Auditorium in a “A Night to Remember!”
Taking the stage in an evening that will long be remembered will be headliners the Doo-Wop Daddies, Kim Marie, Larry Lynne, Junior Brantley, and Door County’s own Gary Lane Van Vorous and Paul Lent. It will be a “Night to Remember” the oldies but goodies…great fun for all ages.
Based in Milwaukee, The Doo-Wop Daddies capture the sound that became a classic genre for the generations to follow. The Daddies have redefined the doo-wop of 60 years ago into a masterful performance that will bring the audience to its feet. The group includes Craig Fairchild, Mark Lansing, Mike Welch, Mike Sturino, and Tom Rupenhoff.
Kim Marie recorded her first songs “Jingle Jump” and “Flip Side” when she was only 17 years old. Early in her career she was performed in Las Vegas including the famour Flamingo Hilton. Recalling the distinctive styles of Brenda lee, Connie Francis, and Laverne Baker, Kim Marie is always a favorite.
Leader of the band Skunks, Larry Lynne was formerly the lead guitarist for the Doo-Wop Daddies, as well as spending time as a Mad Lad, his recordings include “I Recommend Her,” “Little Angel,” and “Me & Happiness.” In concert Lynne performs many of Ricky Nelson’s favorites.
Returning to Door County, Grammy nominated Junior Brantley has recreated the sound and style of Chuck Barry, Little Richard, Jimmy Vaughn, and Jerry Lee Lewis. A former member of the fabulous Thunderbirds, Brantley was member of the group when they recorded “Tough Enough,” which became a worldwide hit.
Door County’s first rock and roll recording artist, Gary Lane Van Vorous graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1960. Leaving the peninsula, Lane--who shortened his name for show business—hit the road with a number of guy groups, most notably The Tokens who recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
In the course of his career, Lane has performed with some of the biggest names in rock and roll, including Gene Pitney, Del Shannon, Lou Christie, and Bobbie Hatfield. Lane credits Dick Clark and Pearl Bailey with providing him with some of the best advice he ever received. “Dick told me to ‘be careful what you sign,’ and Ms. Bailey said ‘honey, just keep on keepin’ on—you’re gonna make it.”
Also a graduate of Gibraltar High School, class of 1979, Paul Lent has toured the Midwest as the lead vocalist for the band “Worlds.” He is the co-founder of the group “After Dark” which has enjoyed regional success, sharing the stage with renowned artists REO Speed Wagon, Starship, Loverboy, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Night Ranger.
Lent was honored with an invitation to sing the National Anthem at Lambeau Field for a Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals home game. Lent will perform the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
From Bill Haley and the Comets to the Righteous Brothers, “A Night to Remember” will recall some of the most memorable singers in rock and roll history…and recall the legends of the 50s and the 60s.
Tickets for “a Night to Remember” are 36/$26 and $20, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

Paula Poundstone in Concert in Fish Creek!

Just received this press release:

______

The Door Community Auditorium
presents
Paula Poundstone in Concert
Saturday, September 5, 2009, 8 pm

Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone, and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone’s ability to create on the spot humor has become the stuff of legend. It is impossible to attend a Paula Poundstone performance without marveling at her ability to interact spontaneously with audience members. And on Saturday, September 5 at 8 pm, Ms. Poundstone will bring her unique brand of humor to the Door Community Auditorium.
Ms. Poundstone’s career as a humorist began in Boston in 1979 when the emerging comedian performed “stand-up” on open-mike nights, supplementing her income with jobs bussing tables and working as a bicycle messenger. It wasn’t long, however, before Ms. Poundstone’s talents were recognized, and five years later she was cast in the movie Hyperspce.
But instead of pursuing a career as an actress, Ms. Poundstone continued to apply her wit to contemporary issues, a perfect match for the nightly talk shows. By 1990, Ms. Poundstone had starred in several HBO specials, as well as a Saturday Night Live show. It proved pivotal to her career. Ms. Poundstone’s first one-hour HBO special earned her a Cable ACE for best comedy special, the first woman ever.
With a spontaneity and clever repartee that hit just the right marks, Ms. Poundstone earned praise from her fans, as well as from critics and her fellow performers. She became a favorite on the talk shows hosts including Jay Leno who hired her to serve as a 1992 Presidential campaign correspondent for his version of the Tonight Show.
One of the most popular panelists on National Public Radio’s weekly news quiz show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me—the recipient of the 2008 prestigious Peabody Award for Broadcasting excellence—Ms. Poundstone’s commentaries can also be heard on NPR’s Morning Edition. They can also be read on the Huffington Post and the comedy site 23/6.
Ms. Poundstone is the author of There’s Nothing In That Book That I Meant to Say, which she describes as “part memoir, part monologue,” and is currently at work on a second. She recently released her first CD entitled I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them In Maine, an hour of comedy recorded live.
Most notably, Ms. Poundstone has also accumulated several “firsts,” most significant among them is being the first woman invited to perform at the distinguished White House Correspondents dinner which is attended by the President. She continues to regularly appear on major talk shows including Late Night with David Lettermen Show and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Ms. Poundstone has also appeared on Garrison Keillor’s radio show A Prairie Home Companion.
With something to say on literally every topic, Paula Poundstone teases the audience, asking them questions, engaging them in a running dialogue. “You know Poundstone’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one—there’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong,” praised the Boston Globe.
Visit http://www.paulapoundstone.com for more information about Paula Poundstone. she is also available on http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/PAULAPOUNDSTONE/
39510582072; twitters can be sent tohttp://twitter.com/PaulaPoundstone.
Tickets for Paula Poundstone are $38/$33 and $28, and are available at the Door Community Auditorium box office, by phone (920.868.2728), or via the www.dcauditorium.org. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance. The Door Community Auditorium is located in Fish Creek, just north of the town center on Highway 42.

Door County Fair is Fun for All!

We just spent several hours at the Door County Fair, in Sturgeon Bay. This is a once-a-year thing, but it's a lot of fun for the locals and those visiting Door County. We shot some video of the fair, and we'll get that posted up soon. Roasted corn on the cob was excellent, even at $2.75 an ear!

The group ate sloppy Joe hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, cotton candy, cheese cake and more - sound like a fair?! Went on lots of rides including the Ferris wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl, Merry-Go-Round, and others; house of mirrors and balloon-popping dart games were popular too. Kids were "fishing" for a prize, knocking down targets with balls, shooting hoops too. And them there were dairy cows, saddle horses, the 4H Club pavilion, and an equestrian judging event.

Head to the fair - it continues for a few more days! Have fun in Door County!

Skies Looking Good at Sundown!

What another beautiful sundown! Great colors, great drama! Have a peek and enjoy. And do come up to Door County and enjoy them live and in-person!

Violinist Ilya Kaler to Substitute for Valentin Zhuk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: SHARON GRUTZMACHER
July 30, 2009 920-854-4060

Violinist Ilya Kaler to Substitute for Valentin Zhuk

Violinist Ilya Kaler has agreed on short notice to substitute for Peninsula Music Festival concertmaster Valentin Zhuk. Mr. Zhuk was to have performed the Khatchatourian Violin Concerto as the featured soloist on Tuesday, August 18 during the Festival’s 57th Season. The Peninsula Music Festival has been unable to secure the proper visa for Mr. Zhuk’s appearance with the Festival as concertmaster and soloist, a visa that has been approved fifteen times prior to this year.
“We are so grateful that Mr. Kaler could be reached, was available and was willing to come to Door County for this important concert,” commented PMF Executive Director Sharon Grutzmacher. “This is not a concerto that many violinist have in their repertoire. We are very lucky.”
Problems began in early July when the Festival became worried that an approved visa had not arrived for Valentin Zhuk. With all previous applications having been approved, there was no inclination that there would be a problem this year. After it became apparent that the approval would not happen in time for the start of the August 2009 Peninsula Music Festival, Music Director Victor Yampolsky and Mrs. Grutzmacher began plans to cover the Festival.
Frank Almond, concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony and past concertmaster of the Festival was available to take Mr. Zhuk’s position as concertmaster of the PMF for week one. MingHuan Xu, an accomplished violinist who concertizes throughout the world, was available to sit concertmaster for weeks two and three. With the concertmaster position solved, the search for a violinist who could perform the Khatchatourian Violin Concerto began. While Maestro Yampolsky traveled back from a vacation in Canada, he contacted Mr. Kaler who has soloed with the Festival three previous times. After he agreed to come, Mrs. Grutzmacher began the job of arranging for flights, securing housing and arranging for an airport pick up. “Everything fell into place. Considering the circumstances, it couldn’t have gone smoother. I appreciate how willing everyone was to help us out!” Mrs. Grutzmacher said.
Ilya Kaler was born in Moscow, Russia into a family of musicians. Major teachers at the Moscow Central Music School and the Moscow Conservatory include Zinaida Gilels, Leonid Kogan and Victor Tretyakov. Ilya Kaler later continued his studies under the guidance of Abram Stern. Mr. Kaler has earned rave reviews for solo appearances with distinguished orchestras throughout the world, which include the Leningrad, Moscow and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestras, Montreal Symphony, Danish and Berlin Radio Orchestras, Detroit Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Seattle Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic and Moscow and Zurich Chamber Orchestras, among others. His solo recitals have taken him throughout the former Soviet Union, United States, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, South Africa and Israel.
An active chamber musician, Mr. Kaler has appeared at many major music festivals throughout the US and Europe with many of the most prominent musicians of our time. One of the most sought-after teachers in the world, Ilya Kaler has served as a Distinguished Professor at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, IN, Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and is currently a Professor of Violin at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago.
Ilya Kaler has many awards to his credit and is the only violinist to have won Gold Medals at the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Paganini Competitions.
Tickets for the Tuesday, August 18 concert are available and range in price from $30 to $61 with discounts available for children and students. The 57th season of the Peninsula Music Festival opens on Tuesday, August 4 and runs through Saturday, August 22 with concerts every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. All concerts are at 8:00 p.m. and are held in the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek. For information on concerts and to purchase tickets call 920-854-4060 or www.musicfestival.com
