The Door Community is Designated
Toys for Tots Drop-off Location

For the more than 60 years the United States Marine Corps Reserve has collected toys for distribution to needy children during the Christmas season. Initiated in 1947 under the direction of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Los Angeles Marine Reservists, 5,000 toys were collected and distributed. Officially named “Toys for Tots” in 1948, the campaign has distributed more than 370 million toys to 173 million children.
This year, the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek has been designated a drop-off location for Toys for Tots which collects new, unwrapped toys, games, and books for children who might not otherwise have a merry holiday.
And the phrase “what’s in a name” is especially relevant for Door County’s collection. A nationally organized effort, Toys for Tots is administered locally by the Sturgeon Bay Jaycees under the name “Toys for Kids” to benefit Door County’s children.
“By collecting under the name Toys for Kids all donated toys, books, and games will be distributed in our county. Monetary donations to Toys for Kids will enable us to purchase the balance of what we need for our children. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to participate in the spirit of the season,” said Toys for Kids coordinator Marsha Price.
From its humble beginnings the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign, supported by a not-for-profit foundation, has grown to play a major role in the development of America’s most valuable natural resource, her children. Today, Toys for Tots is a distinguished award-winning campaign that earned a 4-Star rating from the Charity Navigator in 2005 and 2006.
Every fall—October through December—Toys for Tots collects toys for distribution in the community in which the campaign is conducted. In 2006, 558 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands collected toys in the most extensive campaign to date.
The familiar red train logo so recognizable on the Toys for Tots donation boxes was designed by Walt Disney. Locally, the boxes are scattered throughout locations in Door County. In 2007 the Toys for Kids Program supplied 450 families with gifts and collected $6,000 in donations.
Donations to the Toys for Kids collection boxes can be made through Thursday, December 18. The boxes will be collected by retired Marines on Friday, December 19. All contributions are tax deductible. For information on contributing contact Marsha Price at 920.495.0319. To become a donation site contact Donna Franklin at 920.818.0286.
The Door Community Auditorium box office is open Monday through Friday, 10 – 3 pm; weekend show days, 11 – 3 pm; and one hour prior to a performance.
