Door Peninsula Winery Wins Awards in Florida!

We just received this press release from one of our favorite places - Door Peninsula Winery - and they have won more awards!  Very cool!

--------------

Door Peninsula Winery wins 3 medals at Fla. competition

Three of our wines recently received awards at the 26th Annual Florida State Fair International Wine Competition, sponsored by the Florida Grape Growers Association.

Taking a gold medal at this global event was Blackberry Merlot – one of the 733 total entries to receive this high distinction. This semi-sweet blend has been one of the more-popular wines from Door Peninsula Winery. This wine brings a full, dark fruit flavor with a merlot-style mid-palate.

Two other blended wines – Lighthouse White and Sunset Splash – were awarded bronze medals. Lighthouse White uses Catawba grapes. This aromatic wine is packed with melon, green apple, and orange notes. This sweet white has a pleasing back palate with acidity that allows it to pair well with most foods.
Sunset Splash is made in the style of a white Sangria. It’s a sweet and tropical white wine which is packed with pineapple, mango, and citrus tones – consistently a favorite wine of the customers.

Now in its 40th year of operation, Door Peninsula Winery has continued to be one of the leading wineries in the Midwest, producing over 45 different kinds of wine, from dry to sweet. Located on Highway 42 in Carlsville north of Sturgeon Bay, the winery is open each day at 9 a.m.

For more information on the winery, visit our website at www.DCWine.com, our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DoorPeninsulaWinery or on Twitter by following @DoorPenWinery.

Ted Pollman Scholarship Awarded to Three Area Students
Three students with strong ties to Door County - Spencer Gustafson, Barbara Haverli and Margaret Giblin - have been named the latest recipients of the Ted Pollman Scholarship, it was announced this week.

Now in its 13th year, the Ted Pollman Scholarship was created by the Pollman family, owners of Door Peninsula Winery and other Door County businesses, to honor the memory of their youngest son who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2000. For Gustafson, in his first year as a student at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, the honor of winning a Pollman scholarship is great.

“I know the history behind Ted and how important his name is,” Gustafson said. “I’ve been around the winery family for about 6 years and have grown real close to the Pollman family. So, it’s an honor to receive this.”

The intent of the scholarship is to award a graduating or recently-graduated senior who has overcome financial, scholastic and/or physical challenges in their life and has ambitions of furthering their education. This is true for Gustafson as he furthers his studies in criminal justice and law enforcement.

“I was wondering about how to pay for all of my books,” he said. “Now, I can use this to help with those costs.”
Haverli, currently a senior at Southern Door High School in Brussels, was surprised to win a Pollman Scholarship.
“In the beginning, I wasn’t planning on applying for any scholarships,” she said. “Now that I have been given a scholarship, I’m motivated to start applying for more of them.”

Haverli has spent her summers working at Shipwrecked Restaurant in Egg Harbor and is planning on enrolling in the accredited Ultrasound Technician Program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay.
Giblin has begun her studies at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, majoring in athletic training. She has spent previous summers working at Cooper’s Corner in Fish Creek as a hostess and waitress.

“I wasn’t really expecting it,” Giblin said. “This is a really nice honor and just working so much at Cooper’s, it’s nice to actually be appreciated in such a way.”

Giblin, a recent Sevastopol High School graduate who will still be working at Cooper’s during her academic breaks, hopes to return to Door County after college to work as a trainer at one of the area high schools.

The intent of the Pollman Scholarship is to award a graduating senior who has overcome financial, scholastic and/or physical challenges in their life and has ambitions of furthering their education

Applicants are asked about their educational aspirations, community involvement, extracurricular involvement, and the challenges they have faced and overcome. Each application is read by the Pollman family and a deserving student is chosen based on their answers.

The Pollman family has owned Door Peninsula Winery since 1984 and also owns Door County Distillery and Bistro 42, attached to the winery; Cooper’s Corner, The Barrel Room and The Cherry Hut in Fish Creek; and Shipwrecked Brew Pub and Fat Louie’s Olive Oil in Egg Harbor.

Ted Pollman Scholarship Awarded to Two Graduating Seniors

Carlsville, WI - Recipients of the 2013 Ted Pollman Scholarship were announced this week. Michael Eric Wolfe, Sturgeon Bay High School Senior, and Patricia Hernandez, Sevastopol High School Senior, were chosen out of many deserving candidates from the four area schools.

The Ted Pollman Scholarship was created by the Pollman family, owners of Door Peninsula Winery and other Door County businesses, to honor the memory of their youngest son who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2000. Despite being diagnosed with severe learning disabilities at the age of five, Ted exceeded through hard work and persistence. The intent of the scholarship is to award a graduating senior who has overcome financial, scholastic and/or physical challenges in their life and has ambitions of furthering their education.

The scholarship is in its twelfth year, beginning in Biloxi, Mississippi at Ted's alma mater, St. John's High School. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the high school was destroyed and the decision was made to move the scholarship to Sevastopol High School due to Door Peninsula Winery's location within the school district. This year is the first that the scholarship has been open to students in all four area high schools.

"We decided that seniors from all the schools should have an opportunity to apply for the scholarship," said Noreen Pollman, President of Door Peninsula Winery. "We own businesses throughout the county and wanted to be able to support students in each community."

Applicants are asked about their educational aspirations, community involvement, extracurricular involvement, and the challenges they have faced and overcome. Each application is read by the Pollman family and a deserving student is chosen based on their answers.

"It was difficult for us to make a decision," said Bob Pollman. "We received so many deserving applications this year that we couldn't decide on just one. We are pleased we are able to help these young people and keep the memory of our son going."

There are 3 additional Ted Pollman Scholarships awarded each year to deserving employees going on to higher education.

The Pollman family has owned Door Peninsula Winery since 1984 and also owns Door County Distillery and Bistro 42, attached to the winery; Cooper's Corner, The Barrel Room and The Cherry Hut in Fish Creek; and Shipwrecked Brew Pub and Fat Louie's Olive Oil in Egg Harbor.

Door Peninsula Winery Continues to Win Gold

Carlsville, WI - Door Peninsula Winery (DPW) announced the winning of its first gold medal of 2013 last Thursday. The medal was awarded to their Lighthouse White vintage at the annual International Eastern Wine Competition (IEWC), a competition that judges wines from across the Midwest, Eastern United States & Canada.

This award recognizes Lighthouse White as being in the top 10 percent of all wines in this year's competition of over 1,037 entries.

Made from regionally sourced Catawba grapes, Lighthouse White is one of the most popular wines at DPW.

"I think the popularity of Lighthouse White is due to the fact that it is very similar to Moscato, which has a huge following in the market right now," said Paul Santoriello, winemaker for DPW. "It is a sweet white, balanced with high acidity, making it a very easy drinking wine that pairs well with almost any food."

Lighthouse White is part of DPW's Signature Lighthouse Series; a collection of premium varietal, or grape, wines like Merlot, Chardonnay and estate-grown grapes like La Crosse and Marechal Foch Hybrid Red.

DPW's Sweet Survivor was also awarded a bronze medal at the IEWC. Sweet Survivor has been a philanthropic project over the last 3 years for DPW. $1 from every bottle sold is donated to Door CANcer, a community volunteer organization benefiting the families of cancer victims.

"Since beginning this project, we've been able to donate over $6,000 to Door CANcer," said Rob Pollman, Chief Operations Officer at DPW. "Both the wine & the project have been very well received. Winning a medal for Sweet Survivor is just another way for us to spread the word about the organization & helping families in Door County."

DPW is in its 39th year of operation and offers complimentary tastes of the full line of award-winning wines at the tasting bar in Carlsville, open daily, year round. More information about wines and hours of operation can be found on DPW's website: http://www.DCWine.com.
