Door Peninsula Winery & Door County
Distillery Win International Awards
Carlsville, WI - Door Peninsula
Winery (DPW) & Door County Distillery (DCD) announced receiving national
and international recognition for their wines and spirits last Friday.
DPW won Double Gold medals for
their Mango & blended Chaos Red wines and Best of Class for Mango. from the
Jerry D. Mead New World International Wine Competition. The competition is held
in Southern California that is open to wines produced anywhere in the "New
World", including all of North America, Central America, and South
America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. And is consistently billed as
the only competition in America, and perhaps the world, to pit the best wines
against each other to determine an overall best of variety or type.
"Winning Double Gold for any
of our wines is a significant award," said Rob Pollman, Chief Operations
Officer at DPW. "To have won Double Gold for two of our wines, plus a Best
of Class, among such competition is a huge accomplishment and honor."
Double Gold is an award given to
the top 3% of all wines entered in a competition and Best of Class is reserved
for the best wine of a competition for its category.
"These awards speak to how
we truly capture the fruit flavors in these wines," said Paul Santoriello,
Winemaker at DPW. "This is the first time either has won Double Gold. I
think it's the start of something big. They are nice awards and it's nice to be
recognized."
DCD also entered a product into
the same competition: Apple Brandy, which took a silver medal. Spirits
competitions are few, but wine competitions typically have a spirits category
for products derived from wine, primarily brandy, because of the growing number
of micro-distilleries in the U.S.
DCD also took silver, for its
Gin, and bronze, for its Luminous Vodka, from the San Francisco World Spirits
Competition. This competition is regarded as the most respected spirits
competition in the world by the spirits industry.
"These awards are extremely
prestigious medals to receive," said Kyle Thomas, Head Distiller at DCD.
"Especially, when you consider they were compared to well-known, high-end,
national vodkas, gins and brandies. It's great that, as a micro-distillery, we
can create ultra-premium products and now be world-recognized for them."
Apple Brandy and Luminous Vodka
were both released last fall. Gin has won several awards since its release in
late 2011, including multiple Gold medals. All DPW & DCD products are made
locally and are specialty products of Door County. DCD's Apple Brandy is made
from DPW's Apple wine.
DPW & DCD are located on
Highway 42 in Carlsville and these award-winning products can be sampled daily
from 9am to 5pm.
